(R) Rutherford B. Hayes vs. (D) Samuel Tilden. Electoral Collage needed 185 to win 3 states' votes were contested. Rutherford B. Hayes got the 20 contested votes to win 185-184. Compromise of 1877 Gives all 20 votes to Rutherford B. Hayes Remove the military from the South (Martial Law is ended) Leads to period of Jim Crow South and ends Reconstruction as the troops were removed from the southern states and there was less federal government oversight on those states
What were the causes for the end of reconstruction?
1873 - Depression, 1875 - Civil Rights Act of 1875, 1875-1877- Democrats gain influence, Supreme Court rulings weakened the government's ability to enforce civil rights cases, and Election of 1876 (Final nail in the coffin)
How did Democrats gain influence lead to the end of reconstruction?
1877 every Southern State majority Democrat, Democrats against most reconstruction acts that the north imposed
How did the Depression of 1873 lead to the end of reconstruction?
End of reconstruction because no money for reconstruction and less resources/money to be allocated. There was also a waning (decreasing) interest in Reconstruction, more people were focusing on their own states who were struggling than on the reconstruction states
What was Plessy vs. Ferguson?
Homer Plessy was ⅛ black and violated the Louisiana Separate Car Act by sitting in the white train car. He was jailed for doing this, and the case went to the Supreme Court. This Act was an example of segregation and a Jim Crow Law. The ruling of the case from Justice Henry Billings Brown was that races are equal, but they can't be treated the same and should remain separate (i.e. the separate but equal doctrine)
What were the Jim Crow Laws?
Jim Crow Laws were state laws, mainly in the South, that segregated blacks and whites, discriminated against blacks, and made it hard for some African-Americans to get back into society
How did the Supreme courts weaken government's ability to enforce civil rights cases and how did this lead to the end of reconstruction?
The Supreme Court rulings favored over the federal government, there was less action taken by the Supreme courts to end discrimination.
How did the Civil Rights Act of 1875 lead to the end of reconstruction?
This court case was ineffective. It required African Americans to make their own claims in court. It was expensive to make their own claims, as they were trying to make a living, but had to spend time and money to go to court
