The theme of the this story is never get cocky. Smiley was saying how his frog could jump higher than any other frog, but in the end the frog end up getting killed.

The tone in We Wear the Mask is frustration and defiance because the speaker is defiant against an oppressive society. He hides his true self as an act of defiance and control. The speaker is simultaneously frustrated by needing to hide his true feelings from society. The tone in Sympathy is mournful tone because he feels a great kinship with the bird in the cage, and seems to feel a degree of anger on the bird's behalf as well. He sees himself as the bird, beating its wings ceaselessly against the bars of the cage to no avail and singing a song of grief.
