- File compression - a very complex field: o Loss-less compression = no loss of quality; and o Lossy compression = some loss of quality File compression for examples is taking a video that is 24frames per second, and then getting rid of some frames, so the video is compressed, most people wouldn't even notice the change. - Simplification - remove web page elements which need big files - no video/sound/complex animation - Reduce actual size of web page elements - smaller pictures, shorter animation/video/sound/etc - Trade-off quality against file size - fewer colours, lower quality sound, jerky animation/video/etc - Nothing - rely on broadband access and the user's eventual satisfaction with what they get (or their lack of an alternative!)

- Fonts should be kept to a minimum (2-3) so as not to overwhelm your visitors. - Different fonts say different things about a design. Some look modern, some look retro. - The font you want may not be available to all users. Consider using an image instead - Sans serif fonts are easier to read on a web page - There needs to be contrast between text and background - Size - text is meant to be read, not just looked at. - Text sizes should be consistent, large enough to be read, and proportioned so that headings and sub-headings stand out appropriately. - The human eye finds it difficult to read longs lines of text (particularly on screen). - Fully justified text is difficult to read NOTE: Keep it simple, Users will rarely come to your site just to gaze in awe at your wonderful design capabilities - they want something and they generally want it quickly
