In 1789, the French people rebelled against the French king. The lower class people felt that their rights were being violated by the government. This war was inspired by the American Revolution. The French people wanted "liberty, equality, and fraternity." Americans were split on helping France. So Washington and Congress decided to stay neutral in the war. This revolution was where the French citizens overthrew the French Monarchy by executing King Louis XVI and many French leaders. Many Americans were horrified. Jefferson wanted to help (anti-federalist). John Adams (Federalist) did not, fearing this kind of terror could spread to the US.
