Explain at least 2 strengths and 2 weaknesses of the one-party, two-party, and multiparty systems of government. (Include at least one country example for each type of government)
Examples of a one-party, two-party, and multiparty system are the People's Republic of China, the United States, and Canada, respectively. In a one-party system, reform is easy and elections cannot cause disputes. These are considered to be strengths, because these traits of a one-party system benefit the country and call for a sense of peace, even though most one-party systems are dictatorships. However, the citizens in a one-party system have almost no voice in the government and elections are meaningless. The people cannot contribute their ideas. In a two-party system, parties have to work together to get things done and parties are encouraged to create broad platforms to include many types of voters. These are strengths of a two-party system since they help unite the people. Two weaknesses are that the government can change and third parties do not have a real chance at winning elections. The candidate that a person wants may not become elected, and third parties are at a huge disadvantage with the United States' two-party tradition. Lastly, in a multiparty system of government, more parties have a say in the government and parties work together to achieve their goals. Everyone is able to join the party they believe in. However, since there are many parties in a multiparty system, it is hard for parties to win the majority and some people think that the government is unstable and confusing. The constant change of who is in power can be somewhat frustrating for the citizens.

Why did Federalists think adding a Bill of Rights was not necessary?
Federalists thought adding a Bill of Rights was not necessary, because the Constitution was a Bill of Rights. They questioned the fact that if rights were left off the list, that might mean that people did not have that right. Instead, Federalists were not afraid of their rights not being protected, because the Constitution created a system of three governmental branches that could check and limit each other's power. Therefore, the national government would not become too powerful and take away states' and individual citizens' rights.
How did John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau differ on the idea of a social contract?
John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau all had different opinions on the idea of a social contract. A social contract is an agreement between the people and government in a society in which the citizens agree to give up some rights and power in exchange for protection. John Locke believed that if the government abuses their power and does not keep their promise to protect the people's rights, the citizens have the right to revolt. However, Thomas Hobbes believed that once the people handed over their power, they lost the ability to overthrow the government. Lastly, Jean-Jacque Rousseau's idea on a social contract was completely different from the other two men in that he believed a social contract was unnecessary. In a state of nature, people were free and happy. Instead, Rousseau thought that people should give up their rights to a whole community rather than to one person. In conclusion, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau had differing opinions on the idea of a social contract.
Describe the Electoral College system. Include in your answer: 1. what is it, 2. why it is know as an indirect system of voting, 3. how votes in each state determined, 4. the different methods states use to count votes, 5. and the significance of the numbers 538, 270, 29, and 3 in your answer.
The Electoral College is a system that the U.S. uses to elect the president and vice president. It is known as an indirect system of voting since the people do not directly vote for presidential candidates. Instead, the citizens vote for a group of electors who then vote for their state. The number of electoral votes in each state is determined by adding the number of representatives that state has in the House of Representatives with the number of Senators they have. 48 out of the 50 states use the winner-takes-all method, in which the winner of the popular vote in a state receives all of that state's electoral votes. On the other hand, Nebraska and Maine use the direct method. These two states divide their electoral votes based on congressional district. In the Electoral College system, there are 538 total votes, so a candidate needs 270 to win the presidency. Florida has 29 electoral votes, and Washington D.C. has 3. The Electoral College system certainly has some weaknesses, but overall, it is a fair system.
Choose 3 countries with different forms of government, name and define the type of government and explain where the power lies in each country.
The United States, Saudi Arabia, and Great Britain all have different forms of government. For starters, the United States is a great example of a representative democracy since it happens to have the oldest one in the world. This means that the citizens of a country pick a smaller group of people to represent them, make laws, and govern on their behalf. The power lies with the people. In Saudi Arabia, the power lies with the king who has unlimited power. This Middle Eastern country has an absolute monarchy. Lastly, Great Britain has a constitutional monarchy that is led by a hereditary leader that inherits the position but is limited by the constitution. The monarch of the country shares the power with Parliament, which is the legislative body that includes representatives of the common people. All in all, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Great Britain each have unique forms of government.
Federalist or Anti-Federalist: "If men were angels, no government would be necessary... You must first enable the government to control the governed..."
The above quote was stated by a Federalist. The speaker is explaining that by nature, humans have problems internally and externally. A government is necessary to stop these issues from occurring. The Federalist states, "You must first enable the government to control the governed." This quote explains that the point of a government is to control the people and provide care for them. However, the only possible way for the government to be able to assist with the complicated essence of human nature is to first allow the government to have some power. This idea must have been promoted by a Federalist since it is in favor of the Constitution giving some power to the national government to control he people.
Explain how representation was determined according to the Great Compromise.
The method of representation determined according to the Great Compromise is based on the combination of the Virginia and New Jersey Plans. This was to please both the large and small states. Federalist or Anti-Federalist: "This Constitution is said to have beautiful features, but when I come to examine these features, Sir, they appear to me horribly frightful... Your President may easily become King..."
The quote above must have been said by an Anti-Federalist. The speaker states, "Your President may easily become King." This provides a big hint that this Anti-Federalist is fearful of a leader who would abuse their power in the same manner than King George did. Additionally, the speaker is trying to explain that the Constitution's features are "horribly frightful". This also proves that an this quote was said by an Anti-Federalist since the person is criticizing the power of the national government. Since Anti-Federalists preferred to have a weak national government, it would make sense for them to critique the Constitution that called for a strong national government.
Analyze the following quote from Thomas Paine's Common Sense. "We have boasted the protection of Great Britain without considering that her motive was interest, not attachment; and that she did not protect us from our enemies on our account, but from her enemies on her own account. . . "
This quote written by Thomas Paine puts the emphasis on Great Britain's motives and the harsh reality of being led by another country. England controlled the United States for her own benefit. The tiny island only cares for the colonies in situations when it is in their best interest. Additionally, the United States is enemies with various countries because of Great Britain. Therefore, Thomas Paine believes that America should break their ties with Great Britain, because they do not care about helping the new country.
