Hemianopia/hemianopsia

blindness in one half of a visual field

Non-corresponding field deficits

heteronymous hemianopia (also directly described - bitemporal or nasal)

Homonymous hemianopsia

loss of half of the field of view on the same side in both eyes

How does homonymous hemianopsia affect the patient?

loss of independence, fear of falling/running into things, feeling overwhelmed and unsafe in crowds

loss of the right field of view in both eyes

When does homonymous hemianopia frequently occur?

stroke, TBI, tumor -due to crossover of optic nerve fibers as they pass to the back of the brain
