Virginia Company

(Previously London Company - joint stock London Company of Virginia and Plymouth Company of Plymouth) 1609 Charter increased power over colony. Company had trouble attracting new colonists. Starving time - winter 1609-1610. They offered private land ownership in the colony to attract settlers, but the Virginia Company eventually went bankrupt and the colony went to the crown (1624) - *Royal Colony. Gov. De La Warr imposed harsh discipline (ineffective). Gov. Dale used incentives - private ownership, cultivation of land. Virginia did not become a successful colony until the colonists started raising and exporting tobacco. Promised Englishmen same rights.

Indentured Servants

they received transatlantic passage and eventual freedom in return for several years of labor. Africans not initially considered slaves.

Powhatan Indians

tribes surrounding Jamestown, gave the settlers food, taught them the ways of the forests and introduced new crops (corn and yams), constantly warring with the settlers who suppressed them.

Maryland

Catholics. George Calvert, first lord Baltimore. Son, Cicilius, got grant for territory and absolute rule. Proprietary Colony - charter where private land owners have rights. Native helped with farming. Catholics a minority, religious toleration for non-C majority. Conflicts b/w Catholics and Potestants. Headright System. Tobacco cultivation.

Royal Colony

A colony under the direct control of a monarch. Jamestown in 1624.

London Company

A joint-stock company chartered in 1606 (Charter Colony) by James I, founded first permanent English settlement in America, a profit-earning venture; Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. Aboard: Godspeed, the Discovery, and Susan Constant.

Proprietary Colony

Charter where private land owners have rights instead of a king.

Tobacco

Discovered by Columbus. John Rolfe was the father of the tobacco industry. England created a high demand for this product. Highly profitable business in Jamestown. Consumed land, plantations deeper in Indian territories

Jamestown

First permanent colony, original settlers suffered from disease (malaria), used energy searching for gold and resorting to lumber, iron. Food a low priority. Economy stabled after tobacco was cultivated, near Chesapeake Bay (1607.)

Virginia

Gov. William Berkeley appointed by King Charles I (he promised to stop expansion past a line, couldn't keep promise with substantial population growth. Many disputes. Was an autocrat, only landowners on his side could vote.) Bacon's Rebellion occurred here in Jamestown, ________.

Headright System

Headrights were parcels of land consisting of 50 acres. Given to colonists who brought indentured servants into America. Used by the Virginia Company to attract more colonists. Each settler got a Headright, encouraging whole families to come. Quitrent (paid 1 shilling/yr. annual tax paid to proprietors.)

John Smith

Helped found and govern Jamestown (Council President). His leadership and strict discipline helped the Virginia colony get through the difficult first winter. Raided Indian villages.

Pocahontas

Thomas Dale kidnapped chief Powhatan's daughter. She later married John Rolfe and converted to Christianity.
