Be able to explain the disagreement between Pope Gregory and King Henry?
The disagreement was that Pope Gregory believed that the emperor should not have power over the church. Gregory then insisted that the only the Roman pontiff, or pope, had the right to choose bishops and both of them wanted to appoint bishops. Pope Gregory then issued a list of rules declaring his supreme authority over both Church and secular , or non - church leaders. He climbed power to depose or remove from office, any public official. Henry then ignored the pope's rules. In response, Pope Gregory appointed a rival bishop. When Henry tried to remove Gregory from his position as pope, Gregory excommunicated Henry. Henry waited in the snow for three days with no power The pope then forgave Henry Later Henry marched his army to Rome and forced him out of the city.
