King Philip's War

1675 - A series of battles in New Hampshire between the colonists and the Wompanowogs, led by a chief known as King Philip. The war was started when the Massachusetts government tried to assert court jurisdiction over the local Indians. The colonists won with the help of the Mohawks, and this victory opened up additional Indian lands for expansion.

Puritans

A religious group who wanted to purify the Church of England. They came to America for religious freedom and settled Massachusetts Bay. set sail for America in 1630

Anne Hutchinson

Anne Hutchinson was a Puritan woman living in Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was brought to trial by John Winthrop in 1637 because she was interpreting scripture and preached individuals could receive direct revelation from God about their salvation. As a result, she was banished from the colony. Hutchinson is significant because she exemplified the lack of tolerance colonial Massachusetts had for dissenting opinions. She threatened Winthrop's strict religious and social order that he felt was essential to the colony's success. She also is an early example of a woman, in the U.S. challenging mainstream societal expectations and rigid gender roles.

Bacon's Rebellion (1676)

Armed rebellion in Virginia against Governor William Berkeley, who had the support of the British government. Forces from England came to Virginia to suppress the resistance and reform the colonial government to one that was more directly under royal control.

John Smith

Helped found and govern Jamestown. His leadership and strict discipline helped the Virginia colony get through the difficult first winter. Told many lies.

Great Dismal Swamp

It relates because until now most people probably have not heard of the Great Dismal Swamp, so it is one of the many parts of history brush over and hidden away unless someone does some deep digging. Also, it is a historical memory because there are not many firsthand accounts from the Maroon communities, only accounts of people who interacted with them or the few artifacts historians have found. Meaning they would have to base their knowledge off other accounts and the few artifacts that were found.

1619 project

The 1619 Project is an ongoing project developed by The New York Times Magazine in 2019 which "aims to reframe the country's history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of [the United States

Columbian Exchange

The exchange of plants, animals, diseases, and technologies between the Americas and the rest of the world following Columbus's voyages.

Jamestown, Virginia

founded in 1607, it was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. They became enemies very quickly because Virginians did not pursue them as allies or attempt to work with them, but rather put them to work for themselves yet they still relied on them for food. Virginians used and exploited the indigenous people and their land. They profited from harvesting and selling tobacco which is addicted, and it ultimately boosted their economy. They also used indigent Britons, and later on Africans, for labor and work.
