-grows just enough for family -if there happens to be extra yield, they sell it to the gov't

-highly mechanized agro-business -less farmers (less than 2%) -it's all about profit -spends lots of money on transportation -uses lots of science that can be bad bc of chemicals & herbicides being put into the food
