How organisms interact in a community
Commensalism
1 organism benefits, while the other organism is neither helped or harmed
Example of Commensalism
A Remora (fish) swims with a shark and feeding from the scraps of the shark
Example of Mutualism
Aphids (ants) suck fluids from a plant, "honeydew" sugar water leaks out of their butt, larger ants lick the honeydew, so they protect the aphids in order to get the honeydew
A clown fish is protected by an anemone's stinging tentacles. The Sean anemone gets nothing out of the relationship
Commensalism
Ants get honeydew from and Aphids anus, the Ants protect the Aphids
Mutualism
Example of parasitism
Tick sucking blood out of an animal
Predation
act of one organism killing another for food
Coevolution
back and forth evolutionary adjustments between interacting members of a community
Niche
functional role of an organism in an ecosystem (job)
Parasitism
one organism lives in or feeds off another organism
Secondary Compounds
plants defenses against predators, such as the oil "Urushiol" in poison ivy that causes itching
Mustard, Cabbage, Radish
puts out a strong aroma and taste as a secondary compound for protection
Dolphin
the only mammal on earth that will murder, not just kill for food
Urushiol
the type of oil made from poison ivy that results in skin irritation
Symbiotic relationship
when 2 or more species live together in a close long term relationship
Mutualism
when both organisms benefit from the relationship-
