Relief sculpture

is any work which projects from but which belongs to the wall, or other type of background surface, on which it is carved. Reliefs are traditionally classified according to how high the figures project from the background.

Palette

is both a physical object which artist use as a surface for mixing colors, and a way to describe a picture's color scheme.

Printmaking

is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. Printmaking normally covers only the process of creating prints that have an element of originality, rather than just being a photographic reproduction of a painting.

Composition

is the way in which the elements of art are arranged on a picture plane.

Subject matter

Pictorialism

was an early style of photography which sought to mimic painting and get people to think of photography as an art.

Intaglio

engraving, etching, drypoint , and aquatint are types of intaglio. This process was used by Durer to create the "Adam and Eve" print from 1504 we looked at. In this method the lines below the surface of a plate receive the ink.

Context

Context can mean understanding the iconography or cultural meaning of elements of the work,

Who said, "If you come close to the truth, there are consequences?" In what ways is this true for the FSA photographic project and its photographers? Explain using two specific works by at least one photographer.

Dorothea Lange, an American documentary photographer and photojournalist once said, "If you come close to the truth, there are consequences?". The reality of poverty in America wasn't a situation that was taken seriously. If you didn't actually live in poverty, it didn't exist. The FSA Photographic Project brought the truth about poverty to light and connected people and faces to this social issue. Through this project, people in the community who didn't recognize poverty could now see that not only did poverty exist in their communities but they could see the pain and anguish in people's faces through the pictures. Sometimes being a native to a community doesn't mean you know the truth about your community or see the social issues. This project stirred up some controversy that had both negative and positive effects. Some negative effects include the photographers being threatened and unwelcome into poverty stricken areas but the positive effect was more revealing. This project brought the reality of poverty in America to light in a way that couldn't be ignored. Talking about this issue is one thing but really seeing the pain and struggling in someone's eyes is completely different.
