HVAC chapter 2 technical terms
Hazard Communication Standard (HCS)
An OSHA stranded that requires chemical manufactures distributors, or importers to provide safety data sheets (SDS) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products.
Hazard pictograms
Convey health risks, physical and environmental hazards information, assigned GHS hazard class and categorizes.
Lockout/tagout(LOTO)
In which an electrical witches is locked open and tagged.
Stationary refrigerant detector
Is a refrigerant detector in a fixed location that will note an increase of refrigerant vapors or gases in advance of dangerous levels.
Globally harmonized system (GHS)
Is a standardized system for labeling chemicals.
Lock out (LO)
Is the practice of locking a mechanism or an electrical switch in the open position so that maintenance work or service work can be performed
Tag out (TO)
Is the practice of placing a tag on a mechanism or an electric switch to inform others that service work is in the process and that this mechanism or switches position should not be changed.
ASHRAE standard 34
Names refrigerants and assigns safety classification according ti their flammability and toxicity
Occupational safety and health act (OSHA)
The law that covers workplace safty
class D
This extinguisher can extinguish anything that is a combustible metal such as magnesium and lithium
Class C
This extinguisher can extinguish anything that is a electric fires, such as motors and switches
Class B
This extinguisher can extinguish anything that is a flammable liquid, such as gasoline and oil
class A
This extinguisher can extinguish anything that is a ordinary combustible such as wood, paper, and textiles.
signal words
Words such as "danger" or "warning" are used to indicate the relative level of severity of the hazard.
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Worn by a technician to minimize exposure to health and physical hazards.
Hazard statements
a stranded phrase assigned to a class and category that describes the nature of the hazard.
class A3
based on ASHRAE stranded 34, which refrigerant classification would indicate greatest flammability
confined space
consists of an area that is closed off from a larger space and is large enough fr a person to enter and preform work.
Air Purifying Respirator
passive respirator that removes dust and certain chemicals from the air.
Supplied Air Respirator
provides supplemental oxygen.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
sheet that provides information on the safe use of and hazards of chemicals, as well as emergency steps to take in the event chemicals are splashed, sprayed, or ingested.
