Internet Explorer (IE)

A popular browser that is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

favorites

A list of URLs for Web sites that you can create for your browser to store so that you can revisit those sites easily.

scroll box

A box in a scroll bar that that indicates your relative position within the window and that you can drag to display a different part of a window.

Search button

A button you click to start a search, when the search is complete, a list of related Web sites opens in a search results Web page on the Address bar.

computer network

A collection of computers and related devices, connected in a way that allows them to share resources including data, hardware, and software.

Favorites bar

A convenient place to store links to Web pages that you use often.

keywords

A descriptive word or phrase you use to search for information related to a top on the Web; used by a search engine to obtain a list of results that include that word or phrase.

Web pages

A document on the World Wide Web that consists of a specially coded HTML file with associated text, audio, video, graphics, and links to other Web pages.

SmartScreen Filter

A feature in Internet Explorer that helps identify potentially unsafe sites you visit detect phishing Web sites.

InPrivate Browsing

A feature in Internet Explorer that lets you view Web sites without the browser storing data about your browsing session.

Web site

A group of Web pages focused on a particular subject.

World Wide Web

A huge database of information that is stored on network servers in places that allow public access. Also known as Web.

Web browser

A program such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari that communicates with a Web server and displays Web pages. Also called browser.

pop-ups

A window that opens on your screen as you visit Web Sites, generally to advertise products you may or may not want.

tabbed browsing

Allows you to open more than one Web page at a time in a browser window; you click a tab to make that Web page the active tab.

Accelerator

An Internet Explorer feature that appears as a button when you highlight a word or phrase in a Web page; you can click the Accelerator button to link to services related to the selected text, such as mapping, translation, or searching.

Web

An Internet service that links documents and information from computers distributed all over the world using the HTTP protocol. Also known as World Wide Web.

Command bar

An area of the Internet Explorer window above an open Web page that provides buttons for many options, such as printing Web pages, adding Favorites, and searching for information.

phishing

An illicit activity used by hackers to trick computer users into revealing personal or financial information through an email message or Web site.

search engine

An online tool that allows you to enter keywords or terms; the engine then presents a list of sites that match those terms.

vertical scroll bar

Appears along the right side of a page window if the page is longer than the window's viewable area; allows you to move the current Web page up or down in the browser window. See also Scroll bar.

Home button

Click to display the Home page for the browser.

tabs

Identify Web pages open in the browser; you click a tab to view the Web page and make it the active tab.

address bar

In a window, the area just below the title bar that shows the file hierarchy, or address of the files that appear in the file list below it; the address appears as a series of links you can click to navigate to other locations on your computer.

status bar

Located at the bottom of the window; displays the Web addresses of a link on the Web page when you move your mouse pointer over that link; also shows the zoom percentage.

Forward button

Navigating to a new Web page using the Forward button.

Back button

Navigating to the previously viewed Web page using the Back Navigation button.

View Favorites, Feeds, and History button

Opens the Favorites Center.

Tools button

Provides a menu of useful commands.

menu bar

Provides access to most of the browser's features through a series of menus.

hyperlinks

Provides the fundamental tool for navigating Web pages. Click a hyperlink to jump to a location in the same Web page, open a different Web page, or go to a different Web site. Also called a link.

Navigation buttons

Several buttons in the Address bar that are used to move forward and back from one Web page to another or to the home page.

Favorites Center

Stores and organizes the links to the Web pages that you want to revisit often.

links

Text or an image that you click to display another location, such as a Help topic, a Web site, or a device; can also open graphics or text files or play sound or video files. Also called hyperlinks.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

The Web page's address; appears in the Address box on the Address bar after you open (or load) the page.

domain name

The Web site's name, such as "cengage" in www.cengage.com.

active tab

The current open Web page in the browser window; the tab in front when you view one or more Web pages, with each page open on a separate tab.

home page

The first Web page that opens every time you start Internet Explorer; also applies to the main page that opens when you first go to a Web site.

top-level domain

The letters that follow the domain name in a Web page address that tell you the type of site you are visiting, for example .edu for universities or .gov for government Web sites.

title bar

The shaded top border of a window that displays the name of the window, folder, or file and the app name; darker shading indicates the active window.

browser window

The specific area on the screen where the current Web page appears.

Internet Security properties

The way you set the security levels for trusted sites in Internet Explorer.

digital certificate

Verifies the identity of a person or indicates the security of a Web site.

pinned

When a Web site or images or links from a Web page is saved to the taskbar or Start screen for easy access.
