Seward's Folly
Secretary of State William Seward's negotiation of the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. At the time everyone thought this was a mistake to buy Alaska the "ice box" but it turned out to be the biggest bargain since the Louisiana purchase. It was bought at only 7 cents per acre.

Secretary of State who was responsible for purchasing Alaskan Territory from Russia. By purchasing Alaska, he expanded the territory of the country at a reasonable price.
Panama Canal
Ship canal cut across the isthmus of Panama by United States Army engineers; it opened in 1915. It greatly shortened the sea voyage between the east and west coasts of North America. The United States turned the canal over to Panama on Jan 1, 2000. When the U.S. owned it, it gave them the power to let trade or army ships through which was very important especially during war time.

The Hawaiian queen who was forced out of power by a revolution started by American business interests and didn't want Hawaii to be annexed by the U.S.

US overthrew Queen Liliuokalani in order to make Hawaii there own for its great location and farming conditions and became U.S. territory in 1898.
Spanish- American War
War fought between the US and Spain in Cuba and the Philippines in 1898. It lasted less than 3 months and resulted in Cuba's independence as well as the US annexing Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
Yellow Journalism
Yellow Journalism started the Spanish - American War because it made Americans hate the Spanish because they thought that the Spanish blew up the U.S.S Maine.
