The clinical manifestations include arthritis, carditis, fever, subcutaneous nodules, erythema marginatum, and chorea. It is more commonly diagnosed in close living quarters, such as a dormitory. Prior to use of albendazole, a pregnancy test should be obtained in any woman of childbearing age; liver function tests must be monitored every 2 weeks during treatment. The most common side effects of albendazole are elevated liver function tests and GI symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.
