Laser Jet Printer
A printer that uses toner (ink). Uses heat to print and sprayes it onto paper. Paper rolls around drum and are used in schools
Advantages with projector
Gives a clear view for presentations (better viewing experience)
Advantages with speakers
Good for disabled people (blind), wide audience
Disadvantages with light pen
If you have bad handwriting, it might not understand it, can suffer from lag on screen (drag effect), only for CTR screens, which are not used as often today

Thin Film Transistor
Light pen
Used to draw directly onto a CRT screen.
Advantages with remote
easy to use, can use at a distance (good for hazardous places)
Webcam
A camera that broadcast images through a computer or web cell phone. They have no storage capacity. They can be built-in or attached. For face calls
Mouse
A device that controls the movement of the cursor or pointer on a display screen. You move with the mouse.
Remote control
A device that sends a signal to a device to tell it to do something via pressing a button
Digital/ video camera
A device to take pictures or shoot videos and then saves digital copy, which can be printed out later. Also uses flash memory (flash cards), which you can use to transfer to computer
Output device
A device used to output information. Produces the results from the processor. Seen through monitor
Input device
A device used to put data into a computer system. The data has no meaning before it goes into the processor.
TFT Monitor
A flat monitor that is more modern and takes up less space. Used in schools and offices
CRT monitor
A monitor that is big and like a television screen. Larger and bulkier
Manual input devices
A person as to do something to get data into the computer
Advantages with Inkjet Printer
Cheaper ink, cheaper in general, takes up less space, good for graphics (better print than laser jet), quality isn't bad, doesn't produce harmful compounds
Joystick
Control with the stick by moving it. Used for gaming. Used for motorized wheelchair, car and controlling aircraft
Microphone
Converts sound into dat efor the computer to understand. Can translate speech into text using voice recognition software
Motion sensors
Detects motion and sends a signal to a device. It can e.g. turn on the lights when something moves.
Disadvantages with speaker
Disturb people trying to work around you, good ones are expensive
Advantages with webcam
Easy and accessible, easy to have conversation, you can collaborate on projects through a webcam, it doesn't record- private, no need to turn it on,
Advantages with mouse
Easy and simple to use, better than touchpad, doesn't take up that much space
Advantages with joystick
Easy and simple to use, more of an experience
Advantages with touch screen
Easy to use, good for people with disabilities
Advantages with touchpad

Chip and pin reader
Enter PIN to access information. Put card in reader and the reader reads the chip and you need to enter PIN. Screen of reader tells you what to do

Expensive, only big places use it, can be slow because of queue

Expensive, toners are expensive, quite big, not good for environment (produces ozone)
Optical Mark Reader
OMR, can e.g. mark a test if you put it in a machine by scanning the writing on the paper and gives results. Used in lottery tickets and test
Projectors
Output device for displaying content on large screens/wall for a wide audience. Cinema like effect. Controlled with remote, so presentation with out computer.
Speakers
Output device used to hear sound from the computer. Either built in or plugged in
Disadvantages with MICR
Paper has to be flat, you have to buy a reader which can be expensive, limited characters can be read
Disadvantages with chip and PIN reader
People can see the code (increase in theft), readers are not cheap, if you forget your pin chaos
Headphones
Play private sound, only meant to be heard by one (or two) person/person. Used for individual projects
Advantages with OCR
Quick to edit, easy, much faster than someone typing up the information (cheaper, because no need to hire)
Advantages with senors
Reading are more accurate than by humans Constantly - dont get tired like humans Respond to information immediately - burglary No need for humans to be present - hazardous areas
Biometric devices
Reads something unique to you e.g. fingerprint reader, iris scanner and body scanner. They are used to ensure that its you.
MICR
Scans magnetic ink (which is a account number on checks), scans one account number and transfers money to another. I.e. reads magnetic ink and turns into data for computer
Pressure sensors
Senses pressure and gives a signal to a device. An object puts pressure onto a plate.
Advantages with TFT monitor
Smaller and lighter, more portable, uses less power and produces less heat, better for eyes because less radiation + glare
Disadvantages with barcode reader
Sometimes it doesn't work e.g. if the paper is wet, readers are expensive, barcodes can be swapped by customers, so they have to pay less
Disadvantages with microphone
Sometimes the computer cant understand you, background sounds can ruin it, sometimes bad quality, audio files take up a lot of space

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
Takes a picture of a paper and puts it into word so you can edit

Takes up a lot of space, not portable at all- very heavy Can get hard and cause fire Uses much more power Screen can flicker and lead to headcache

Useful, you cannot see them, does it automatically
Inkjet Printer
Uses ink cartridge, (very small), squirts ink on the page, usually have one at home
Concept keyboard
Uses symbols. Can decide what each of the keys stand for. Used in fast food chains. Might have some numbers. Touchscreen
Disadvantages with Dot Matrix Printer
Very bad quality, usually only in black, very slow, very noisy, no pictures, has to be different room, bad paper quality
Advantages with Dot Matrix Printer
Very cheap - paper, ink and maintenance, makes multiple copies in one piece of paper (continuous), can be used is dusty + dirty places where normal printers would break
Disadvantages with plotters
Very expensive (to maintain), can be very big (needs separate room), takes a long time
Advantages with Laser Jet Printer
Very fast, both black and white and colour, Good quality, Vary in size, Toners last a long time, comes out dry, not noisy
Advantages with OMR
Very quick (10000 pr/h) and easy to use, very accurate
Advantages with magnetic stripe reader
Very quick and easy. No queue in supermarket, no typing errors, information can be seen by the naked eye
Advantages with chip and PIN reader
Very secure, reader is portable
Advantages with digital/ video camera
You can store them, they have flash (light), you can retake picture and preview them, images can be used on computer for stuff, pictures/video can be edited using software
Advantages with motion sensors
You don't have to e.g. turn on the lights, can sense someone breaking into a house
Disadvantages with projector
You have to calibrate it (sync it), maintain it - clean it, fix it, recalibrate it; very expensive - repairs can be more expensive than projector, difficult to set up, can sometimes be fuzzy
Disadvantages with touch screen
You have to calibrate it, preprogrammed (limited amount of options), gets dirty, screen can break, can lead to RSI
Disadvantages with mouse
You have to carry it around, need space and flat surface, people with disabilities or poor hand movements might find it difficult, easily damaged /get dirtied.
Disadvantages with joystick
You need practice (if for computer, more difficult than mouse), hurts you fingers if its little, can be too sensitive, difficult for people with bad hand/wrist movement
Disadvantages with scanner
You need special software to edit, quality becomes worse when scanned, takes up space on computer

a device that generates a digital representation of an image for data input to a computer
Touchpad
a small, flat device that is sensitive to pressure and motion. Used to click on things and is built in the computer
Touch screen
a touch-sensitive display device (both input and output device)
Graphics tablet
allows you to create sketches and drawings for display on a monitor. Use with anything to do with design or graphics.
Disadvantages with remote control
buy a remote to a specific thing, people lose them all the time, have a certain range (signals can be blocked), battery life, people with limited hand/wrist movement can find it difficult

measures how light or dark the surrounding is
Disadvantages with numeric keypads
only number (text is difficult to type in). Keys can be small, so hard to type in
Magnetic stripe reader
reads black stripe on cards. Stores unique information. Uses reader to access. Swipe card. Information can give you access to something.
Barcode reader
reads data from dark (not black) and white lines. Doesn't read price of item. Can see which item. Underneath the barcode are numbers, which you can enter on a computer if the barcode is failing
QWERTY keyboard
the most common keyboard arrangement, named for the first letters across the top row

very easy to use, good security, faster for numbers than normal keyboard,
Plotter
A device to produce line drawings e.g. blueprints and very large prints. Prints by moving coloured pens with a computer

Have to shade at correct place, the paper has to be flat - cannot be crumbled, cant doodle, can only read shaded stuff - no writing

If someone steals your card, they can use it, very easy to forge, if stripe is damaged, too bad, card has to be in contact with reader, can only store a small amount
Disadvantages with motion sensors
If you are too short, it might not sense you, can be too sensitive
Disadvantages with OCR
If you have bad handwriting, it can't recognise it, no very accurate, so you have to still check it over
Disadvantages with Inkjet printer
Ink cartridges are small (run out quickly and more expensive pr page), slower, ink can be wet, not dry, more noisy, ink cartridges can dry up if not used

Its hackable, its automatically on - you have to manually turn it off, need to connect to internet to broadcast, often poor quality

Limited battery life, you have to increase to memory if needed by buying another memory card, some you have to plug in the computer to get it in the computer, expensive, video/picture take up space on computer, resolution of printed picture are not as good as traditionally printed picture
