What roles do carbon dioxide and oxygen play in photosynthesis?

Plants extract the carbon dioxide from the air and use it in the photosynthesis process to feed themselves. The carbon dioxide enters the leaves of the plant through the small pores called stomata. Once the process is done, the plant releases oxygen into the surrounding air.

Why are the leaves of most plants, which contain many chloroplasts, green?

They contain a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs certain wavelengths of light within the visible light spectrum. Green light is not absorbed but reflected making the leaves look green. Chlorophyll is found in the chloroplasts of plants.
