You have three cubes, A, B, and C. They have surface to volume ratios of 3:1, 5:2, and 4:1 respectively. Which of these cubes is going to be the most effective at maximizing diffusion, how do you know this?

A: 3:1 B: 5:2 C: 4:1 The cube that will be most effective at maximizing diffusion will be the cube that has a surface to volume ratio of 4:1 because it has a higher surface area to volume ratio so it is more efficient. Having a high surface area to low volume will ensure that the inside of the cube will be the most effective at maximizing diffusion.

If a large surface area is helpful to cells, why do cells not grow to be very large?

Cells don't grow to be very large because if a cell's surface area increases so will it's volume causing diffusion to be inefficient, and diffusion won't occur through the inside of the whole cell.

Why can't certain cells, like bacteria, get to be the size of a small fish?

In order to maximize diffusion throughout cells, certain cells need to stay small for the proper action, which means if a cell like bacteria was a size of a small fish, the surface area to volume ratio would be much too small to ensure proper and thorough diffusion through the whole cell.

What are the advantages of large organisms being multi-cellular?

Multicellular organisms have many types of cells, while unicellular organisms contain just one cell each. Multicellular organisms have specialized cells that engage in more complex physical and cognitive tasks than unicellular organisms. Also, multicellular organisms have separate organ systems to perform specific tasks. These systems, such as the cardiovascular, digestive and respiratory systems, perform life processes necessary for survival.

Did starch exit the bag and why?

No, because it was to large of a sucrose to leave the bag

How does your body adapt surface area-to-volume ratios to help exchange gases?

Our bodies have adapted to have larger organs which are made up of small spheres which cover as much surface area as possible in order to more efficiently exchange gases. Our body has a job of making sure a good surface area to volume ratio is established in the areas where the gas exchange happens. In order to do this, large animals like us Humans need special respiratory organs such as lungs for taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide.

In terms of maximizing diffusion, what was the most effective size cube that you tested?

The most effective size cube in terms of maximum diffusion is the smallest cube (1cm x1cm x1cm) .

you are a technician using what you learned from performing these leaves along with your knowledge of biology and diffusion describe how the process of dialysis cleans a person's blood

The way this works is through a process called diffusion. In the blood of the hemodialysis patient, there is a high concentration of waste, while the dialysate has a low concentration of waste. Due to the difference in concentration, the waste will move through the semipermeable membrane to create an equal amount on both sides. The dialysis solution is then flushed down the drain along with the waste. The electrolytes in the dialysis solution are also used to balance the electrolytes in the patient's blood. The extra fluid is removed through a process called filtration. The fluid is pushed off by higher pressure on the blood side than on the dialysate side

Did Lugol's (iodine) enter the bag and why?

Yes because the bag changed color meaning the iodine interacted with the starch left in the bag

Why was that size most effective at maximizing diffusion? What are the important factors that affect how materials diffuse into cells or tissues?

he smallest cube was the most effective at maximizing diffusion because it has the smallest volume, so the diffusion can occur all the way through the cube. Also because a smaller cube has a bigger Surface area to volume ratio. This means that more substances can diffuse through the smaller cube much faster due to having a bigger surface area that has a smaller volume. The factors that affect how materials diffuse into cells or tissues are temperature, concentration, type of material, size of the cell, and polarity.

glucose stay inside or outside of the bag and why

left the bag because it is small enough to0
