Alternating Current (AC)

Alternating current (AC) is the flow of electrons first in one direction and then in the opposite direction.

Direct Current (DC)

Direct current (DC) is the flow of electrons in one direction, maintained by constant or uninterrupted voltage.

Amperage

The amount of electric current flowing through a circuit is amperage; it's measured in units called amperes or amps.

Ohm's

The magnitude of electrical resistance in a circuit is measured in ohms; resistance is the opposition that a circuit creates against the flow of electrical current.

Ampere

The movement of electrical charge at a rate of one coulomb per second.

Electric Current

The movement of electrons.

Watt

The power exerted in a circuit with an electromotive force of one volt and a current of one ampere.

Ohm

The resistance which allows a current of one ampere when an electromotive force of one volt is applied to a conductor.

What is EMF measure in?

The strength of EMF or electrical potential is measured in volts; the more volts that are present, the greater the electrical potential will be.

Volt

The work of one joule per coulomb.

Formula: Ohm's Law

V=IR; Ohm's law states that voltage (in volts) equals current (in amperes) multiplied by resistance (in ohms); The units of ohm, ampere, and volt have a special relationship to one another as defined by Ohm's law.

Watts

Watts are used to measure power, or the amount of useful work that can be done by a circuit.

Coulombs

When measuring electricity, the quantity of electrical charge is measured in coulombs.

Electromotive Force

Whenever a positive charge and a negative charge are positioned close to each other, electromotive force (EMF) exists; it's a force that tends to move electricity.

A common source of direct current is a

battery

If an LED is properly connected by wires to the battery, electrons will leave the ______ terminal of the battery and flow through the wire toward the bulb.

negative

In an electrical circuit, the conductors can be compared to the the _____ in a water system.

pipes

Another term for electromotive force (EMF) is

potential.

In a water system, a valve can be compared to the _____ in an electrical system.

switch
