Several countries allow aboriginal whaling using historical hunting methods -The US is still a whaling country. The Inuit of Alaska still take bowhead whales -This puts the US in an awkward position: pressing whaling countries to stop whaling on the one hand and arguing for quotas for the Inuit (Alaska) and Makah (Washington) tribes on the other i. The most recent controversy surrounds the Makah tribe who, by their 1855 treaty rights, are allowed to take whales. ii.
