Monkey Scribes Chen = spider monkey Batz = howler monkey - they are the elder twin sons of Hun Hunapuh- or the older brothers of the Hero Twins

Patroness of Women, Goddess of Fertility. •Inventor of Weaving. •During labor an idol of Ixchel was placed under the bed of the woman. •May be grandmother of Hero Twins •Name means "Red" (Chak) and "Lady of the Rainbows" (Chel).

Ix Ch'up (Goddess I)

Depicted as young and beautiful- the Moon Goddess •Goddess of women, marriage, and sensual love . •Totem is a rabbit. •The Maya do not see a man in the moon, they see a rabbit.

God of Rain and Lightning - •One of the oldest gods •Olmec worshiped him •God of Rain and Lightning •Aztec equivalent is Tlaloc •Cult still survives among Maya •Lived in caves

K'awiil (God K)

God of Royal Dynasties •Protector of royal lines. •Celestial lightning deity. •Often appears as Chac's smoking serpent lightning axe. •Also associated with rain and maize •Found on scepters. •Originally had a club foot which evolved into a snake.

K'inich Ahaw (God G)

God of Sun •Depicted as middle-aged at height of his powers •Has hooked nose •Squinty, crossed, or distorted eyes •T-shaped tooth •Sometimes bearded - at night, he becomes the Jaguar God

Ha'al Chuhaj /Chuwaaj God L

God of the Underworld •One of the three main Mayan God with Itzamna (God D) and God N •Wealthy god of trade and commerce. •Depicted as prosperous, fat old god smoking a cigar. •Sometimes has a jaguar ear. •Sits on a jaguar pelt like a king. •Wears large feathered headdress in which his muan owl nests. Daughter is mother of Hero Twins
