The surface temperatures of both Venus and Earth are warmer than would be expected on the basis of their respective distances from the Sun. Why is this so?

These two planets are warmer than would be expected because they have atmospheric gases that produce a "greenhouse effect." Sunlight enters the atmosphere of both Earth and Venus, warming the surfaces of the planet. The atmospheric gases are able to trap some of the heat radiated by the planet surfaces. Without these gases, the planets would be the temperatures expected as a result of their distance from the Sun.
