Mineralocorticoids
adrenal insufficiency
-Adrenal insufficiency is a disorder characterized by underactive adrenal glands and an insufficient production of the hormones cortisol and, sometimes, aldosterone. -The adrenal glands are small organs located on top of each kidney. -They consist of an inner layer called the medulla and an outer layer called the adrenal cortex. - In the body, the hypothalamus, the pituitary glands, and the adrenal glands work together to produce hormones that control many body systems. -If any part of their signaling and feedback system is not working it can cause major disruptions and illness within the body.
Fludrocortisone acetate (Florinef) side effects
-HTN, edema due to sodium retention -muscle weakness and dysrhythmia due to hypokalemia
Mineralocorticoids side effects
-sodium and water retention -hypokalemia
Fludrocortisone acetate (Florinef) nursing considerations
1. Give PO dose with food 2. Check BP, weight, electrolytes, I & O, weight 3. Give low-sodium, high-protein, high-potassium diet 4. may decrease effects of oral hypoglycemics, insulin, diuretics, K+ supplements
Mineralocorticoids nursing considerations
1. Monitor BP and serum electrolytes 2. Daily weight, report sudden weight gain to HCP 3. Used with cortisone or hydrocortisone in adrenal insufficiency
Fludrocortisone acetate (Florinef)
Fludrocortisone is in a class of drugs called steroids. Fludrocortisone prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Fludrocortisone is used to treat conditions in which the body does not produce enough of its own steroids, such as Addison's disease, and salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome.
Mineralocorticoids action
Increases sodium reabsorption, potassium and hydrogen excretion in the kidney
Mineralocorticoids indications
adrenal insufficiency
