Personification

Gives human qualities to animals, ideas, or objects.

attitude / tone

How the writer feels about the text, the speaker of the poem, and the subject matter.

consonance

Repetition of similar consonant sounds in the middle or at the end of words.

assonance

Repetition of similar vowel sounds in NON-rhyming words.

mood

The feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader.

portmanteau

Two different terms combined to create a new word/concept through blending of two existing words. (example: "brunch")

metaphor

A comparison of two UNLIKE things in which one thing represents something else. (Does NOT use words such as "like" or "as".)

simile

A comparison of two UNLIKE things using "like" or "as".

stanza

A group of lines in a poem.

repetition

A technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for effect or emphasis.

onomatopoeia

A word that imitates the natural sounds of a thing. It creates a sound effect that mimics the thing described.

allusion

An indirect reference to another well-known work of literature, person, event, or idea.

imagery

Description that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste).

juxtaposition

Placing two things or ideas side by side to create dramatic or ironic contrast.

free verse

Poetry that does not have a regular meter or rhyme scheme.

rhyme scheme

The ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse.

alliteration

The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words.

hyperbole

The use of exaggeration to create a strong effect.

style

The way a poet writes; a poet's word choice, sentence structure, figurative language to establish meaning in the text

figurative language

Writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally and is usually meant to be imaginative and vivid. It often allows readers to think about a concept in a new way.
