Muscles
Buccinator Origin:
Alveolar processes of the maxilla and the mandible, and the pterygomandibular raphe
Styloglossus Origin:
Anterior surface of the styloid process of the temporal bone
Diagastric Function:
Assist in opening of the mouth
Orbicularis Oris Function:
Closing the lips and protruding/ puckering them
Mylohyoid Origin:
Composed of right and left halves that join in the midline of the mandible
Buccinator Function:
Compresses the cheeks against the teeth to assist during mastication. Assists in blowing air out of the mouth.
Zygomatic Major Insertion:
Corners of the mouth
No
Does the hyoid bone articulate with any other bone?
Stylohyoid Function:
Draws the hyoid bone superiorly (up) and posteriorly (back) and keeps it stable
Mentalis Origin:
Incisive fossa of the mandible
Orbicularis Oris Insertion:
Into itself and the surrounding skin around the lips
Geniohyoid Insertion:
Into the anterior portion (front) of the hyoid bone
Mylohyoid Insertion:
Into the body of the hyoid bone
Stylohyoid Insertion:
Into the body of the hyoid bone
Buccinator Insertion:
Into the corners of the mouth, becoming part of the muscles that surround the mouth
Temporalis Insertion :
Into the coronoid process of the mandible and down the anterior border of the ramus.
Internal (Medial) Pterygoid Insertion:
Into the interior surface of the angle of the mandible (opposite of the masseter's insertion).
Diagastric Insertion:
Into the intermediate tendon of the hyoid bone
External (Lateral) Pterygoid Insertion:
Superior: Into the articular capsule of the temporomandibular joint. Inferior: Into the neck of the condyle of the mandible.
Geniohyoid Origin:
The genial tubercle of the mandible
Genioglossus Insertion:
Fans out to insert in the inferior surface of the tongue and to the hyoid bone
Orbicularis Oris Origin:
No skeletal attachment. From the muscle fibers that surround the mouth, maxilla and mandible
Styloglossus Function:
Retracts the tongue and raises the tip of the tongue
Internal (Medial) Pterygoid Muscle

Zygomatic Major Muscle
What muscle is this?
Temporalis Function:
Elevates the mandible- closing the jaw. Contraction of the posterior fibers retracts the mandible.
Internal (Medial) Pterygoid Function:
Elevates the mandible.
Temporalis Muscle Origin :
Fan shape across the temporal fossa of the temporal bone.
Mylohyoid Function:
Forms the floor of the mouth and helps in depressing the mandible and lifting the tongue
Genioglossus Origin:
Genial tubercle in the center of the lingual of the mandible
Hyoglossus Origin:
Hyoid bone
Zygomatic Major Function:
Lifts the corners of the mouth upward and backward, as in smiling.
Hyoglossus Function:
Mainly depresses the tongue
Internal (Medial) Pterygoid Origin:
Medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone, the lateral portion of the palatine bone and the maxillary tuberosity.
Genioglossus Function:
Most of the work of the tongue. Protrudes the tongue and retracts or depresses the tongue
External (Lateral) Pterygoid Function:
Opens the jaw by depressing the mandible. If both laterals contract the jaw protrudes; if only one contracts the mandible shifts laterally.
Styloglossus Insertion:
Part inserts into the sides of the tongue while the rest of the muscle continues forward to the tip of the tongue
Hyoid Bone Location:
Positioned in the neck, suspended between the mandible and the larynx. Suspended from the styloid process of the temporal bone by two styloid ligaments.
Diagastric Origin:
Posterior belly: originates from the mastoid process of the temporal bone. Anterior belly: lingual surface of the mandible.
Hyoid Bone Function:
Primary support for the tongue and other muscles
Geniohyoid Function:
Pulls the hyoid bone and tongue anteriorly (forward)
Hyoglossus Insertion:
Runs vertically to insert into the inferior sides of the tongue
Hyoid Bone Anatomy:
Shaped like a horseshoe and consists of central body with two lateral projections.
Mentalis Insertion:
Skin of the chin
Masseter Function:
Strong elevator of the jaw. Muscle is easily seen when the teeth are clenched.
Masseter Insertion:
Superficial portion: Into the angle and lower border of the mandible. Deep: Into the upper section of the ramus and the lateral surface of the coronoid process.
External (Lateral) Pterygoid Origin:
Superior: From the lateral surface of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. Inferior: From the lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate.
Stylohyoid Origin:
The styloid process of the temporal bone
Masseter Origin:
Two portions: Superficial Portion: (strong, tendinous fibers from the zygomatic process of the maxilla and from the anterior two-thirds of the lower border of the zygomatic arch) Deep: (Muscular and smaller from the medial aspect and inferior border of the posterior one-third of the zygomatic arch)
