CSU founding

- CSU was founded in 1870 as a land grant institution and was originally named Colorado Agricultural College - it opened for classes on September 1st 1879 - there were 5 students enrolled at the college: 2 women and 3 men - only 3 of them graduated: Elizabeth Libby Coy, Leonidas Loomies, George Clover. You'll see all of their names all over campus - George Clover then become the first first president of the Colorado Agricultural College Alumni Association

Canvas Stadium

- CSU's on campus stadium was finished in 2017 and hold 41,000 seats - Inside is the Iris and Michael Smith Alumni Center, the Collaborative for Student Achievement, Exploratory Studies and Health Professions advising, and classrooms - You already pay for all athletic events through your tuition so in order to get into a football game, basketball game, or any other athletic event, just claim tickets online and scan your student ID when you get to the gate

The "A"

- If you look on the hill you toward Horsetooth, you can see the white "A" which stands for Aggies, our original mascot - It's a tradition that every year first year students have the opportunity to hike to the A during Ram Welcome week

Alumni Center

- Inside Canvas Stadium is the Iris and Michael Smith Alumni Center which pays tribute to all things that make us proud to be CSU Rams. It is a place for alumni, students, families, and friends to gather and celebrate - Some notable CSU alumni include former governor, Bill Ritter, Amy Van Dyken who is an Olympic champion swimmer and radio show host, and Leslie Jones who is a comedian who starred on SNL

Vietnam War Memorial Bridge

- It was constructed in 1992 across a ditch as an act of healing to heal the wounds that the war left on the nation and CSU's campus - Bricks from the burnt down Old Main building were used to build this bridge

RockWell Hall

- It was opened in 1939 originally as a women's dorm however in 1994, it was turned into the College of Business - There is also a coffee shop in this building!

Moby Arena

- Opened in 1966 the auditorium/gym was nicknamed Moby because of it's whale shape - This is where commencements for both CSU and nearby high schools take place and is a venue for concerts by the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, and Van Halen just to name a few - this is where basketball, volleyball, and swimming/diving competitions take place and like I said earlier, all of these athletic events are free to you with your CSU ID

The Cannon

- Our ROTC military cannon is a requirement since we are a land grant institution and we were actually one of the first institutions in the nation to have an ROTC program - Every time CSU scores in a football game or when we sing the national anthem, the cannon goes off

Student Media

- Rocky Mountain Student Media was founded in 1891, and they give students on-the-job training for newscasting, entertainment, and other content provided to CSU and the Fort Collins Community - they have six award-winning student-run media outlets: rocky mountain collegian, KCSU 90.5, collegian TV, college avenue magazine, tree stump films, and CSU life - any qualified student can work in these offices no matter your major

Intramural Fields

- The IM fields are right outside the rec and this is where IM teams practice and play. the teams can be coed or just single gender - There's normal sports like soccer and basketball that happen that can be played at a competitive level or just recreational but there's also some interesting IM sports like inter tube water polo and tennis bowling

Scott Bioengineering

- The Suzanne and Walter Scott Jr. Bioengineering building was finished in 2013 and allows our bioengineering students to practice it's mission of providing education, discovery, outreach, and service - Some awesome parts of this building are a 24 hour study spot open to all students, a design studio for engineering construction, teaching and research labs, and an engineering student success center that houses academic advisors, career development, the undergrad research program, and the professional learning institute

CSU Bookstore

- The bookstore is two levels! The top level sells merch like shirts and hats and cups while the bottom sells new and used textbooks and school supplies - Any profits that are made from the bookstore go back to fund the LSC - You can also reserve and pre-order textbooks online by putting in your information and the people at the bookstore will gather all the books you need and you just have to pick it up

Indoor practice facility and academic training center

- The indoor practice facility is right across Plum from Corbett Hall and is dedicated to athletic success - It includes a 70 yard turf field, 4 lane training track, basketball and volleyball courts, a weight room, hitting areas for softball and golf, and private tutoring rooms with computer labs

Thurman "Fum" McGraw Athletic Center

- This is on the west side of Moby and includes athletic facilities, sports medicine classrooms and labs, and weight and training rooms - It also houses the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame - It was named after Fun McGraw who was a 3 sport CSU athlete and American Pro-Football Player

Student Rec Center

- This is one of the most popular spots on campus as many students come here daily - It is free to you with your student ID because you pay for it through your tuition - Lots of activities happen here like free fitness classes, I take cycling twice a week here and I love it, there's also a two story fitness center, an indoor track, a climbing wall, a huge pool and jacuzzi with a steam room and sauna, and so much more. - This is also where you will go If you want to participate in IM sports there's just a $10 fee and you can join or make any IM team you want

Nancy Richardson Design Center

- This is one of the newer buildings on campus as it was opened in 2019 and is located next to Canvas Stadium - It was designed to meet LEED-gold standards for sustainable practice and the WELL building standards for improved human health and wellbeing - This building has some awesome study spots and you don't even need to be a design major to study in this building

Ram Card Office

- This is where you will take your picture for your RamCard and where you will pick up your student ID - Your RamCard is probably one of the most important things you will need throughout your entire time at CSU - You use this to get into dining halls, athletic games, printing papers, and get into TILT for tutoring sessions - Your RamCard also has your RamCash on it, which you will use to buy food at the LSC food court or vending machines or coffee shops on campus

Off Campus Life

- This office is meant to help you find places to live off campus, find roommates, and all of the details about how to rent an apartment or house regarding your rights

Green Hall

- Was first opened in 1954 and was originally used a male dorm but in 2011, the CSU police department made Green Hall their home

Palmer Center

- Was opened in 1967 and was first used as a residence hall for women but now houses the department of housing and dining services since 1990

Student Diversity Programs and Services

- We are a campus that supports diversity and multiculturalism as a part of our mission - El Centro: LSC 225 - Asian/Pacific American Cultural Center: LSC 333 - Black/African American Cultural Center: LSC 335 - Native American Cultural Center: LSC 327 - Pride Resouce Center: LSC 232 - Women and Gender Advocacy Center: LSC 234 and Student Services Building in room 112 - Student Disability Center: TILT and LSC 223 You do not have to identify with these cultures to enter these offices. You can go to learn about it!

Morgan library

- William E. Morgan was our 8th president and the library was named after him and was built in 1964 - the person who designed the library actually designed it to look like an open book. the lighter colored center is the spine and the stone on the sides is the cover - so many resources in the library that are accessible with the use of your Ramcard: chargers, headphones, laptops, projectors, markers, and so many other things - there's a coffee shop inside called "Morgan's grind" which was opened in 2011 - a newer 24 hour study space was added in 2012 called the cube which is the glass structure outside - the library has a website if you ever need to reserve private study rooms, loan books, or find academic journals in their database

Monfort Quad

- a huge grassy area on campus where people hang out to study or let their dogs get some exercise - this area was originally nicknamed the agriculture quadrangle until 1995 when it was renamed in honor of the Monfort family who donated a huge chunk of money because of it's success with the beef industry - Barack Obama visited the quad in 2012 which is the first time a president visits campus while in office

Behavioral Science Building

- another more recent building built in 2010, this houses the department of psychology - they have plenty of places to study and even have a coffee shop inside

Branding Story

- being in the LSC is the beginning of your experience here at CSU. They say that our brand is not our logo or advertisements but our experiences and stories - "we are CSU" pictures are displayed in the LSC and all of these pictures are taken for each new class at the pep rally in the stadium during Ram Welcome - speaking of Ram Welcome, this is where you meet so many new people during the week before classes start. they plan so many activities for you and you learn about different organizations on campus and meet soooo many new people. Ram Welcome for you guys is August 15th-20th

Guggenheim

- built in 1910 as the home of the women's courses and home Econ program - the high altitude baking lab is located in here and was built in 1927. it can cook anywhere that is over 3000 feet which is all of CO - Guggenheim is now home to one of the largest academic programs in construction management in the country

Residence Hall

- currently there are 12 on-campus residence halls and 4 dining centers - the community style dorms are Allison, Durward, Ingersoll, Newsom, Edwards, and Westfall - these community style dorms house about 400-500 students with about 35 students per floor - the suite style dorms are Braiden, Corbett, Pinon, Parmalee, Academic Village, and Summit - these suite style dorms have 2 people per room and 2 rooms are connected by a bathroom - the 4 dining centers are the Foundry, Durrell Express, Braiden, and Ram's Horn - We also have Residential Learning communities where you can live with people in the same major as you which is an awesome community to live in

Oval

- designed in 1909 and is the heart of CSU - before buildings were organized around the oval, they were just randomly placed - President Lory wanted organization to the campus so he designed the oval to have trees, a network of pathways, and a fountain in the middle which is no longer there - today, everyone uses the oval either to study, play with their dogs, or nap

Plant Sciences

- first opened for classes in 19060 and is the home for the department of soil and crop science and the department of bio agricultural sciences and pest management - the USDA's national lab or genetic resources preservation is actually located on CSU's campus and has a seed bank with almost every seeds in the world which is over a billion

Clark Building

- has three wings A, B, and C with B and C being completed in 1967 and A being completed in 1968 - this is the hall where a lot of the big lectures happen so about 4,000 students attend lectures in Clark each hour - the largest lecture hall on campus is Clark A 101 which holds 388 people

The Plaza

- here is where lots of advertising for clubs and organizations happens. they hand out flyers and sometimes even candy if you're lucky - on sunny days there are always lots of tables and booths trying to give you information about different clubs so make sure to check some of them out - the stump is where students will sometimes stand to get everyone's attention and make an announcement - I even helped pass out flyers and drew some chalk art for Ram Welcome out here so lots of people get involved here

Science Row

- houses the departments of chemistry, microbiology, and our top ranked college of vet medicine and biomedical sciences. our vet medicine department is 2nd in the nation now as of April - the microbiology building houses the departments of microbiology, immunology, and pathology - the anatomy and zoology building houses the department of biology and college of vet medicine and biomedical science - the physiology building is the home to the department of biomedical sciences and has research labs for the department of environmental health and radiological sciences

Train + Train Tracks

- in 1877, CSU's governing board granted the RR department a permanent right of way through campus for only $100 which is only about 2.5k today - just make sure to follow the signs near the train tracks and don't walk on the tracks to make sure you don't get hurt

Weber Building

- in 1923 was originally used as a chemistry building but it currently houses the department of mathematics and this is where the pre calc center and testing center are - many of you will spend some time in here your first year because you'll take online math classes - in the 1960s president JFK commissioned the research foundation in this building to study the prospect of a four point youth corps

Flood of 1997

- in 1997, 14.5 inches of rain dumped on CSU and FoCo in just 31 hours - the water flooded the basement of the library and ruined over 400,000 volumes but many gracious donations helped to replace the ruined items - many other buildings had damage to them as well like the basement of the LSC - after this disaster, Fort Collins implemented flood mitigation planning to make sure this doesn't happen again

Sherwood Forest

- in the late 1940s Russel Ford planted a whole bunch of trees and said they were for the future which is now what we know as Sherwood Forest - every tree that is native to CO can be found here and new trees are planted as memorials for people who have been involved in the college - hugging a tree here is on the 70 things to do before you graduate list

Danforth chapel

- is a nondenominational chapel that is open from 7 am to 8 pm everyday and it was completed 1954 and cost over $48k - James Hunter who was the architect that designed this builder, when he passed away his ashes were scattered outside - fun fact you can actually get married inside the chapel

Eddy Hall

- is known as the liberal arts building and was built in 1963 - most classes like composition or pop culture/communications classes are taught in here - the writing center which is an awesome resource to use is in the basement of Eddy and you can make in-perosn meetings with them to review your papers or resumes or you can even just send them a rough draft of your paper and they will review it for you and send it back which is what I do for almost every paper of mine

Spruce Hall

- is the oldest standing building on campus and it was used as a coed dorm starting 1881 - President Elijah Edwards also lived in this building - because it was coed, the rules were super strict with keeping boys and girls apart as the boys lived on the second floor and they would lower pebbles on strings to the girls windows to get their attention

Bike Racks

- like all of FoCo, CSU is a very bike friendly campus and every semester there are thousands of bikes on campus - road rules apply to bikers as well you have to stop at stop signs and if you ride at night make sure you have a night time bike light - if you bring a bike, you have to register it with the CSU police department for $10 as a one time fee. This is to make sure that if it gets stolen the police department can help you - bike theft is a problem on campus so make sure you have a bike lock, the U locks are the best and what the police department recommends

CSU health network

- located at the corner of campus on college and prospect which opened in 2017 - there are real doctors who work there so don't listen to the rumors that it's grad students or fake doctors who work there - the upstairs has a student urgent care and the downstairs has a family urgent care but they have tons of services like dental, optical, mental and medical health services - every CSU student is required to have health insurance and certain vaccines so make sure you submit your records online before coming to school in August - your student fees covering part of the cost for counseling also like STI testing, mental health counseling and more - you can find more info on their services and where to submit forms on their website

Career Center

- offers services like meeting with counselors, resume and cover letter assistance, job fairs, and interview practices to help you prepare for the job field! - they have drop in hours and available to all CSU students, even after graduation - handshake is a great resource to use and is affiliated with CSU for on and off campus jobs both part time and full time

Campus Activities

- offers so many opportunities to become involved and active on our campus through RamEvents, LSC arts, the Flea Market, and the Campus Info and Box Office - they help create large scale events for the whole campus

Old Main

- old main was the first academic building on campus and it was built in 1878 - in 1881, President Edwards and his family moved into the second floor of this building - the first college library was in this building as a small reading room before it was moved over to Laurel Hall - this was home to all of the school's activities like the auditorium, the gym, a chapel. a cafeteria, and all on-campus classes - this building used to be located between Spruce Hall and South College Gym but it's a parking lot now because it was burnt down - there's a few myths actually to how it was burnt down: it was set on fire by war activists, it was burned down by an angry art student who didn't finish a project on time, and it burned down because of faulty wiring. but no one actually knows how old main burned down - there used to be a huge 500 pound bell that was inside Old Main and the tradition was to ring the bell after every home game victory - the bell was stolen in 1919 and buried the bell because they were scared of getting caught but in the 1970s the bell was dug up and moved to an off campus frat house - in 2016, the bell was returned to the driveway of the alumni center and now stands in Canvas Stadium

Student Services Building

- opened in 1948 and was originally a male dorm - originally there was an underground tunnel that connected this building to Johnson Hall - when it was originally a dorm it was super dark and was like a maze, there were no stairs and the doorways were super narrow - when Braiden Hall was constructed, this building then become the Student Services building and this is where the women and gender advocacy center is now. they have services that advocate for victims of sexual violence and harassment, relationship violence, and just provide a safe space for CSU students

Old Town

- our historic downtown FoCo - there's lots of shops, places to eat and hangout - the first restaurant I went to with my dad when we visited CSU was BeauJo's and they put honey on the crust of the pizza which I thought was so weird but its probably one of the best things I've eaten - fun fact FoCo has one restaurant for every 258 citizens which is double the national average - Main Street at Disneyland was designed after Old Town Square in FoCo - We are also 1 out of 5 towns in the nation with a platinum level bike friendly community with over 280 miles of bike trails - Pianos about town has about 20 pianos painted each year by local artists and they are placed in public places. we have one on campus on the Southside of the LSC

Ramskeller

- our personal on campus pub was established in 1968 - they are one of the highest Fake ID confiscators in the state of Colorado - they have their own brewery that is run by the Fermentation science and tech program here at CSU

CSU Mission

- the CSU mission is very important and as a last grant institution, we provide accessible education and research opportunities to anyone who wants it - our 4 core values are education, research, services and extension - we also have 5 principles of community that will be drilled into your heads from now until you graduate and they are integrity, respect, service, social justice, and inclusion - these principles of community support our mission and are the foundation for learning here on campus - every member of the CSU community has a responsibility to uphold these principles when acting on behalf of the university - we are also one of 146 universities in the nation that is a Carnegie 1 research institute with almost every major being able to be involved in research, not just those in science majors

Warner College of Natural Resources

- the Michael Smith Natural Resources building was finished in 2018 and houses the College of Natural Resources and the Department of Earth Resources and Range Science. it's one of the leading programs for natural resources and environment in the U.S - The CSU Mountain Campus is located 50 miles west of FoCo right next to Rocky Mountain national park and our National Resources department gives students the opportunity to attend classes, retreats, workshops and some job trainings - you can even work at Mountain Campus over the summer

Military Sciences

- the ROTC headquarters was opened in 1929 to replace the wooden military building that burned down in a fire - CSU offers Army and Air Force ROTC programs and we were one of the first universities to add military instruction in the form of ROTC to our curriculum - this is home to the department of military science an date department of aerospace studies

Admin Building

- the admin building was built in 1924 and has the office of the president ever since Charles A. Lory served in 1909

TILT

- the institute for learning and teaching was built in 1927 and used as the 3rd on-campus library - after moving the library again, this building was then the music building and hosted the department of music until 2008 - now TILT, they have tutoring and group learning sessions, academic success workshops, study skills resources, and provide research opportunities - the student disability center is also located in here - any student with any type of disability should be in contact with the student disability center - they really help with classroom accommodations, support animals, housing exemptions, and more - it's better to get in contact with them sooner rather than later so that they can help you quicker

President History

- there have been 16 presidents since CSU was founded with Elijah Edwards being the first, Charles A. Lory serving the longest term from 1909 to 1940, you'l see his name around campus a bit, and the first female president was Joyce E. McConnell who served from 2019 to 2022 and Amy Parsons is our current president who started this February

Adult Learner and Veteran Services

- this department supports the academic achievement for all adult learners including veterans and student parents

Campus Info Desk

- this desk is run by super knowledgable students who know everything and anything about this building. organizations, campus offices, community events, LSC lost and found just to name a few

Associated Students of CSU (ASCSU)

- this is CSU's student leadership program and they are the voice for CSU at the local, state, and national level of government - to vote in ASCSU elections, it takes place on RamWeb and they handle most registered student organizations and most of our student fees - they help students when they have issues or concerns, oversee student organizations that serve students, and they are the voice for CSU

- this is a list that is made by students for students on what things they should do before they graduate - of course none of the things on this list are required but there are some fun things on the list like getting a photo with CAM and hugging a tree in Sherwood Forest

Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement

- this is also known as slice and is everything involvement on campus - they bring together students organizations, student leaders and student volunteers to help our community - they also assist student organizations to gain university recognition, budgeting, program planning and more

CAM the Ram Statue

- this ram's butt is facing southwest toward boulder - Cam's name stands for Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical School which was our name before becoming Colorado State - We have had 4 different mascots since being founded: Peanuts the Bulldog who was unfortunately poisoned, Teddy the Bear who wore an Aggie sweater to every sporting event, Gallant Defender who wore a green and gold cape with a big "A" for Aggies and was a gift for Glen Morris for winning a gold medal in the 1936 olympics, and now CAM the Ram who is handled by a team by Ram Handlers who take him to lots of games and events - we are on Cam number 26

Laurel Hall

- was built in 1882 as a barn but quickly became the chem lab the next year - it also served as the second library from 1905 to 1928 with the basement of the building being used by the department of vet sciences until 1907 - our vet program which was founded by George clover is now 2nd in the country - Laurel Hall houses the office of international programs and study abroad - Definitely go talk to them even if you are the tiniest bit interested in studying abroad because this coming semester in the fall I am actually going on semester at sea and getting to visit 13 different countries

Ammons Hall

- was built in 1922 and was used as an athletic and rec center for women - males students back then called this place "no man's land" - inside had the first swimming pool on campus, a gym, and a theater - today this building is the University welcome Center and has been since 2007. it houses the office of admissions

South College Gym/Glen Morris Field House

- was built in 1925 and was home to the Aggie basketball team with the first game being February 28th, 1926 where they lost - during 1942 and 42 the field house became military barracks and the gym was a dining hall to feed the troops that were stationed here - the field house was renamed in 2011 in honor of the famous Aggie who won a gold medal in the 1936 olympics - the CSU health and exercise science department and the track and field team use the facility

Johnson Hall

- was built in 1936 as the first student union and has a game room, lounge rooms, soda fountain, and office spaces - this was a place where students could come together and worked on the idea of a student center so they raised $40K for it which was a huge amount of money during the great depression - this building was named after Arthur Johnson who was the dean of faculty and always told studnets that ethical behavior was more important than the mastery of any school subject - in 1939 a cafeteria and dance floor was added and the second floor had a large ball room and a private ball room which hosted military balls, college proms and performances - the bookstore actually was started here in 1941 as a book exchange before it became the bookstore in the LSC

Nutrien Agricultural Science Building

- was built in 1940 as the Shepardson Building - they house the college of agricultural sciences - recently $43.5 million went to renovating this building which really shows CSU's dedication and investment for the future of agriculture - this building has classrooms as well

Stats Building

- was buit in 1910 as the civil and irrigation engineering building - this department was the pride of the college had a great amount of research and paved the way for CSU's transition into a university - in 1913, the hydraulics lab was finished and water testing experiments could happen in here - our hydraulics lab was most famous for developing models that contributed to projects like the Hoover Dam - Elwood Mead was a professor at CSU and he taught math in the 1880s. he created the revolutionary code of water law that later became a mode for irrigation law the top floor of this building was used as an infirmary for students suffering from the Spanish flu - in 1988 is when this building transitioned to the department of statistics

Computer Science Building

- was finished 2009 and is the home base for computer science and info tech research - this building has a computer lab that is accessible to all students and is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, just make sure you have your ram card to get in once the building closes

Centennial Hall

- was opened in 1951 and was a new annex to Johnson Hall Student Union - it had office spaces, a dining room, banquet rooms, and a self service bookstore - they also had a dark room for processing pictures and a game room with a bowling alley - now Centennial Hall is home to the Office of Financial Aid and the Registrar's Office

Engineering Building

- was opened in 1957 during the Cold War Era when more trained engineers were needed - this building houses the department of engineering, physics, math, and computer science - the physics wing of this building is actually where the first nuclear reactor of any CO school was installed - this building stretches from the Oval to the LSC so definitely a great building to walk through when it's freezing outside

Animal Sciences

- was opened in 1960 but most of the building was renovated in 2014 - there is a dairy products lab on the first floor where milk from the CSU dairy was used to make products for the dining facilities on campus - the rest of the building was renovated in 2017 and by 2019 they had their very own global food innovation center which had an on campus livestock arena and a meat processing center - in this building, you can find the meat lab, a meat retail store, lab spaces, and research kitchens - the first female statue on campus is also in this building of Dr. Temple Grandin

Natural and Environmental Science Building

- was opened in 1994 and it houses the department of horticulture and landscape architecture

LSC Theatre

- was remodeled and opened in 2012 - they have natural lighting, retractable seating, concert quality sound and lighting - events like university welcomes, speakers, documentary showings and more

Frat and sorority life

- we have over 50 frats and sororities for students to join and they create experiences to help you foster relationships and help you grow as an individual - this office also houses the multicultural greek council and nation pan-hellenic council which is for black and African American organizations as well as the profession frat council

Stop Light Story

a fun little story about the oval before we move on is that couples used to take each other to the center of the oval and kiss until the stoplight on Laurel turned green. The stoplight turned red at midnight and didn't turn green again until 6 am

Gibbons building

was built in 1903 and houses the academic advancement center. they offer free tutoring and advising for low income students, first generation students, and students with disabilities
