Procedure for handling page fault

1.) Check an internal table (usually kept with the process control block) for this process to determine whether the reference was a valid or an invalid memory access 2.) if the reference was invalid, we terminate the process. if it was valid but we have not yet brought in that page, we now page it in. 3.) we find a free frame(by taking one from the free-frame list) 4.) we schedule a disk operation to read the desired page into the newly allocated frame 5.) when the disk read is complete, we modify the internal table kept with the process and the page table to indicate that the page is now in memory 6.) we restart the instruction that was interrupted by the trap. The hardware to support demand paging is the same as the hardware for paging and swapping:

1.) Page table. This table has the ability to mark an entry invalid through a valid-invalid bit or a special value of protection bits. 2.) Secondary memory. This memory holds those pages that are not present in main memory. The secondary memory is usually a high-speed disk. It is known as the swap device, and the section of disk used for this purpose is known as swap space.

Under the normal mode of operation, a process may utilize a resource in only the following sequence:

1.) Request - the process requests the resource. if the request cannot be granted immediately (for example, if the resource is being used by another process), then the requesting process must wait until it can acquire the resource. 2.) Use - The process can operate on the resource (for example, if the resource is a printer, the process can print on the printer.) 3.) Release - The process releases the resource

In addition to separating logical memory from physical memory, virtual memory allows files and memory to be shared by two or more processes through page sharing leading to the following benefits:

1.) System libraries can be shared by several processes through mapping of the shared object into virtual address space. Although each process considers the libraries to be part of its virtual address space, the actual pages where the libraries reside in physical mmory are shared by all the processes. Typically, a library is mapped read-only into the space of each process that is linked with it. 2.) Similarly, processes can share memory. Two or more processes can communicate through the use of shared memory. Virtual memory allows one process to create a region of memory that it can share with another process. Processes sharing this region consider it part of their virtual address space, yet the actual physical pages of memory are shared 3.)Pages can be shared during process creation with the fork() system call, thus speeding up process creation.

Readers writers variations

Directory Structure

A collection of nodes containing information about all files. Both the directory structure and the files reside on disk. Backups of these two structures are kept on tapes.

For each use of a kernel managed resource by a process or thread, the operating system checks to make sure that the process has requested and has been allocated the resource.

A system table records whether each resource is free or allocated; for each resource that is allocated, the table also records the process to which it is allocated. If a process requests a resource that is currently allocated to another process, it can be added to a queue of processes waiting for this resource.

Page Replacement Algorithms 2nd-chance

A modified form of the FIFO page replacement algorithm, known as the Second-chance page replacement algorithm, fares relatively better than FIFO at little cost for the improvement. It works by looking at the front of the queue as FIFO does, but instead of immediately paging out that page, it checks to see if its referenced bit is set. If it is not set, the page is swapped out. Otherwise, the referenced bit is cleared, the page is inserted at the back of the queue (as if it were a new page) and this process is repeated. This can also be thought of as a circular queue. If all the pages have their referenced bit set, on the second encounter of the first page in the list, that page will be swapped out, as it now has its referenced bit cleared. If all the pages have their reference bit cleared, then second chance algorithm degenerates into pure FIFO.

Why would anyone favor a preemptive kernel over a nonpreemptive one?

A preemptive kernel may be more responsive, since there is less risk that a kernel-mode process will run for an arbitrarily long period before relinquishing the processor to waiting processes. (of course, this risk can also be minimized by designing kernel code that does not behave in this way) Furthermore, a preemptive kernel is more suitable for real-time programming, as it will allow a real-time process to preempt a process currently running in the kernel.

Deadlock

A process request resources; if the resources are not available at that time, the process enters a waiting state. Sometimes, a waiting process is never again able to change state, because the resources it has requested are held by other waiting processes.

Process Synchronization Critical Section:

A segment of code in a process in which the process may be changing common variables, updating a table, writing a file, etc. The important feature of the system is that, when one process is executing in its critical section, no other process is allowed to execute in its critical section.

The readers-writers problem and its solutions have been generalized to provide reader-writer locks on some systems.

Acquiring a reader-writer lock requires specifying the mode of the lock: either read or write access. When a process wishes only to read shared data, it requests the reader-writer lock in read mode. A process wishing to modify the shared data must request the lock in write mode. Multiple processes are permitted to concurrently acquire a reader-writer lock in read mode, but only one process may acquire the lock for writing, as exclusive access is required for writers.

Preemptive Kernels

Allows a process to be preempted while it is running in kernel mode. Must be carefully designed to ensure that shared kernel data are free from race conditions. Preemptive kernels are especially difficult to design for SMP architctures, since in these environments it is possible for two kernel-mode processes to run simultaneously on different processors.

Memory Mapped Files

Consider a sequential read of a file on disk using the standard system calls open(), read(), and write(). Each file access requires a system call and disk access. Alternatively, we can use the virtual memory techniques discussed so far to treat file I/O as routine memory access. Memory Mapping allows a part of the virtual address space to be logically associated with the file. This can lead to significant performance increases.

File-System Structure

File System Structure How to improve I/O efficiency

I/O transfers between memory and disk are performed in units of blocks. Each block has one or more sectors, depending on the disk drive sector size varies from 32 bytes to 4096 bytes; usual size is 512.

Basic Page Replacement

If no frame is free, we find one that is not currently being used and free it. We can free a frame by writing its contents to swap space and changing the page table to indicate that the page is no longer in memory. we can now use the free frame to hold the page for which the process faulted.

Thrashing

If the process does not have the number of frames it needs to support pages in active use, it will quickly page-fault. At this point, it must replace some page. However, since all its pages are in active use, it must replace a page that will be needed again right away. Consequently, it quickly faults again, and again, and again, replacing pages that it must bring back in immediately. A process is thrashing if it is spending more time paging than executing.

Page Replacement Algorithms (LRU)

Least Recently Used similar in name to NRU, differs in the fact that LRU keeps track of page usage over a short period of time, while NRU just looks at the usage in the last clock interval. LRU works on the idea that pages that have been most heavily used in the past few instructions are most likely to be used heavily in the next few instructions too. While LRU can provide near-optimal performance in theory (almost as good as Adaptive Replacement Cache), it is rather expensive to implement in practice.

Memory Mapping Basic Mechanism

Memory mapping a file is accomplished by mapping a disk block to a page (or pages) in memory. Initial access to the file proceeds through ordinary demand paging, resulting in a page fault. However, a page-sized portion of the file is read from the file system into a physical page. Note that writes to the file mapped in memory are not immediate (synchronous) writes to the file on disk. Some systems may choose to update the physical file when the operating system periodically checks whether the page in memory has been modified. Semaphore Implementation

The definitions of the wait() and signal() semaphore operations suffer from busy waiting. To overcome the need for busy waiting, we can modify the definition of the wait() and signal() operations: -When a process executes the wait() operation and finds that the semaphore value is not positive, it must wait. However, rather than engaging in busy waiting, the process can block itself. The block operation places a process into a waiting queue associated with the semaphore, and the state of the process is switched to the waiting state. The control is transferred to the CPU scheduler, which selects another process to execute.

Page Replacement Algorithms MFU

The idea is that the most recently used things will remain in the primary cache, giving very quick access. MFU works well if you have a small number of items that are referenced very frequently, and a large number of items that are referenced infrequently. A typical desktop user, for example, might have three or four programs that he uses many times a day, and hundreds of programs that he uses very infrequently. If you wanted to improve his experience by caching in memory programs so that they will start quickly, you're better off caching those things that he uses very frequently.

Belady's Anomaly

The number of faults for four frames (ten) is greater than the number of faults for three frames(nine)! Belady's Anomaly: for some page-replacement algorithms, the page-fault rate may increase as the number of allocated frames increases. We would expect that giing more memory to a process would improve its performance.

cause of thrashing

The operating system monitors CPU utilization. The CPU scheduler sees the decreasing CPU utilization and increases the degree of multiprogramming as a result. The new process tries to get started by taking frames from running processes, causing more page faults and a longer queue for the paging device. As a result, CPU utilization drops even further, and the CPU scheduler tries to increase the degree of multiprograamming even more. Thrashing has occurred, and system throughput plunges. The page-fault rate increases tremendously. As a result, the effective memory access time increases. No work is getting done, because the processes are spending all their time paging. TLDR; As the degree of multiprogramming increases, CPU utilization also increases, although more slowly, until a maximum is reached. If the degree of multiprogramming is increased even further, thrashing sets in, and CPU utilization drops sharply. At this point, to increase CPU utilization and stop thrashing, we must decrease the degree of multiprogramming

The paging hardware, in translating the address through the page table, will notice that the invalid bit is set, causing a trap to the operating system. This trap is the result of the OS failure to bring the desired page into memory

The percentage of times that the page number of interest is found in the TLB. An 80 percent hit ratio, for example, means that we find the desired page number in the TLB 80% of the time. If it takes 100 n/s to access memory, then a mapped-memory access takes 100n/s when the page number is in the TLB. If we fail to find the page number in the TLB then we must first access mmory for the page table and frame number (100 n/s) and then access the desired byte in memory (100 n/s), for a total of 200 n/s.

Page Replacement Algorithm FIFO

The simplest page-replacement algorithm is a FIFO algorithm. The first-in, first-out (FIFO) page replacement algorithm is a low-overhead algorithm that requires little bookkeeping on the part of the operating system. The idea is obvious from the name - the operating system keeps track of all the pages in memory in a queue, with the most recent arrival at the back, and the oldest arrival in front. When a page needs to be replaced, the page at the front of the queue (the oldest page) is selected. While FIFO is cheap and intuitive, it performs poorly in practical application. Thus, it is rarely used in its unmodified form. This algorithm experiences Bélády's anomaly.

Page Replacement Algorithms (LFU) - Least Frequently Used

The standard characteristics of this method involve the system keeping track of the number of times a block is referenced in memory. When the cache is full and requires more room the system will purge the item with the lowest reference frequency.

Local Replacement Algorithm

Used to limit the effects of thrashing. If one process starts thrashing, it cannot steal frames from another process and cause the latter thrashing, they will be in the queue for the paging device most of the time. The average service time for a page fault will increase because of the longe average queue for the device. Thus, the effective access time will increase even for a process that is not thrashing.

Executable & Linkage Format (ELF)

Virtual address space of a process Each ELF file is made up of one ELF header, followed by file data. The file data can include: -----Program header table, describing zero or more segments -----Section header table, describing zero or more sections -----Data referred to by entries in the program header table, or the section header table The segments contain information that is necessary for runtime execution of the file, while sections contain important data for linking and reloction. Each byte in the entire file is taken by no more than one section at a time, but there can be orphan bytes, which are not covered by a section. In the normal case of a Unix executable one or more sections are enclosed in one segment.

Sparse address spaces

Virtual address spaces that include holes Using a sparse address space is beneficial because the holes can be filled as the stack or heap segments grow or if we wish to dynamically link libraries(or possibly other shared objects) during program execution.

It is critical that semaphore operations be executed atomically

We must guarantee that no two processes can execute wait() and signal() operations on the same semaphore at the same time. This is a critical section problem, and in a single processor environment, we can solve it by simply inhibiting interrupts during the time the wait() and signal() operations are executing. This scheme works in a single-processor environment because once interrupts are inhibited, instructions from different processes cannot be interleaved. Only the currently running process executes until interrupts are reenabled and the scheduler can regain control.

(page replacement) We can reduce overhead by using a modify bit (or dirty bit)

When this scheme is used, each page has a modify bit associated with it in the hardware. Set by the hardware whenever any byte in the page is written into, indicating that the page has been modified. When we select a page for replacement, we examine its modify bit. If the bit is set, we know that the page has been modified since it was read in from the disk. In this case, we must write the page to the disk. If the modify beit is not set, however, the page has not been modified since it was read into memory. In this case, we need not write the memory page to the disk: it is already there.

Is the kernel code subject to race conditions?

Yes, at a given point in time, many kernel-mode processes may be active in the operating system. As a result, the code implementing an operating system (kernel code) is subject to several possible race conditions: structures for maintaining memory allocation, maintaining process lists, and for interrupt handling.

Process Synchronization Cooperating Process:

a process that can affect or be affected by other processes executing in the system. Cooperating processes can either directly share a logical address space (that is, both code and data) or be allowed to share data only through files or messages.

Indefinite blocking or starvation

a situation in which processes wait indefinitely within the semaphore. Indefinite blocking may occur if we remove processes from the list associated with a semaphore in LIFO order.

Contiguous Allocation (Cont) -----Operating System maintains information about:

a.) allocated partitions b.) free partitions (hole)

Priority-inheritance protocol

according to this protocol, all processes that are accessing resources needed by a higher-priority process inherit the higher priority until they are finished with the resources in question. When they are finished, their priorities revert to their original values.

Copy-on-Write

allows the parent and child processes initially to share the same pages. These shared page are marked as copy-on-write pages, meaning that if either process writes to a shared page, a copy to the shared page is created.

Locality Model

as a process executes, t moves from locality to locality. A locality is a set of pages that are actively used together. A program is generally composed of several different localities, which may overlap. To prevent thrashing the working-set strategy starts by looking at how many frames a process is actually using.

Binary Semaphore

can range only between 0 and 1. Thus, binary semaphores behave similarly to mutex locks. In fact, on systems that do not provide mutex locks, binary semaphores can be used instead for providing mutual exclusion.

Counting Semaphore

can range over an unrestricted domain. Can be used to control access to a given resource consisting of a finite number of instances. The semaphore is initialized to the number of resources available. Each process that wishes to use a resource performs a wait() operation on the semaphore (thereby decrementing the count). When a process releases a resource, it performs a signal() operation (incrementing the count). When the count for the semaphore goes to 0, all resources are being used. After the, processes that wish to use a resource will block until the count becomes greater than 0.

Deadlock Avoidance

deadlock avoidance requires that the operating system be given in advance additional information concerning which resources a process will request and use during its lifetime. It can decide for each request whether or not the process should wait. The system must consider the resources currently available, the resources currently allocated to each process, and the future requests and releases of each process.

The valid-invalid bit scheme

distinguishes between the pages that are in memory and the pages that are on the disk. when this bit is set to "valid", the associated page is both legal and in memory. If the bit is set to "invalid", the page either is not valid (that is, not in the logical address space of the process) or is valid but is currently on the disk. The page-table entry for a page that is brought into memory is set as usual, but the page-table entry for a page that is not currently in memory is either simply marked invalid or contains the address of the page on disk. While the process executes and accesses pages that are memory resident, execution proceeds normally.

Non preemptive Kernels

does not allow a process running in kernel mode to be preempted; a kernel-mode process will run until it exits kernel mode, blocks, or voluntarily yields control of the CPU. Essentially free from race conditions on kernel data structures, as only one process is active in the kernel at a time.

Memory Mapped I/O

each I/O controller includes registers to hold comands and the data being transferred. Ranges of memory addresses are set aside and are mapped to the device registers. Reads and writes to these memory addesses cause the data to be transferred to and from the device registers. This method is appropriate for devices that have fast response times, suh as video controllers. Memory Mapped I/O is also convenient for serial and parallel ports used to connect modems and printers to a computer. The CPU transfers data through these kinds of devices by reading andwriting a few device registers, called an I/O port. To send out a long string of bytes through a memory-mapped serial port, the CPU writes on data byte to the data register and sets a bit in the control register to signal that the byte is available. The device takes the data byte and then clears the bit in the control register to signal that it is ready for the next byte. If the CPU uses polling to watch the control bit, constantly looping to see whether the device is ready, this method of operation is called programmed I/O. if the CPU does not poll the control bit, but instead receives an interrupt when the device is ready for the next byte, the data transfer is said to be interrupt driven.

We say that a set of processes is in a deadlocked state when

every processes in the set is waiting for an event that can be caused only by another process in the set. The events with which we are mainly concerned here are resource acquisition and release.

In a multiprocessor environment, interrupts must be disabled on every processor. Otherwise,

instructions from different processes (running on different processors) may be interleaved in some arbitrary way. SMP systems must provide alternative locking techniques-such as compare_and_swap() or spinlocks - to ensure that wait() and signal() are performed atomically.

The bounded-buffer problem

Instead of swapping in a whole process, the pager brings only those pages into memory that it guessed will be used. Thus,

it avoids reading into memory pages that will not be used anyway, decreasing the swap time and the amount of physical memory needed

Demand paging

load pages only as they are needed, commonly used in virtual memory systems. Pages are loaded only when they are demanded during program execution. Pages that are never accessed are thus never loaded into physical memory. Similar to paging system with swapping where processes reside in secondary memory (usually a disk). Use a lazy swapper instead of swapping entire process into memory. A swapper manipulates entire processes, whereas a pager is concerned with the individual pages of a process.

Demand Paging Example Demand paged memory. Page table is held in registers. Takes 8m/s to service page fault if an empty page is available or the replace page is not modified, and 20m/s if the replaced page is modified. Memory access time is 100n/s. Assume that the page to be replace is modified 70% of the time. What is the maximum acceptable page-fault rate for an effective access time of no more than 200 nano seconds?

Another possible solution to the external-fragmentation problem is to permit the logical address space of the processes to be noncontiguous, thus allowing a process to be allocated physical memory wherever such memory is available. Two complementary techniques achieve this solution:

This synchronization problem is referred to as the readers-writers problem.

statistical analysis of first fit reveals that even with some optimization, given N allocated blocks, another 0.5 N blocks will be lost to fragmentation. That is, one-third of memory may be unuseable

A crucial requirement for demand paging is:

the ability to restart any instruction after a page fault. Because we save the state (registers, condition code, instruction counter) of the interrupted process when the page fault occurs, we must be able to restart the process in exactly the same place and state, except that the desired page is no in memory and is accessible. If we fault when we try to store in C because C is in a page not currently in memory, we will have to get the desired page, bring it in, correct the page table, and restart the instruction. The restart will require fetching the instruction again, decoding it again, fetching the two operands again, and then adding again.
