Parts of a Check
Check number
Checks are numbered sequentially for easy identification. (Top right corner)
Date
Enter the date the check is written. (#1 on the picture)
Signature
Sign the check on the signature line. (#6 on the picture)
Amount of the check in numerals
Write the amount neatly and clearly close to the dollar sign, with dollars and cents clearly separated. (#3 on the picture)
Personal information
The account holder's name and address are printed on the check. (Top Left Corner)
Account Number
The account number appears as the bottom middle set of numbers on the check
Memo
The memo line appears at the left bottom of the check. This is optional but you may wish to fill in information here. (#5 on the picture)
Payee or Pay to the order of
The payee is the person or company to whom the check is payable. (#2 on the picture)
Routing number
The routing number appears at the bottom left of the check. This allows for identification of the bank. (Bottom of check)
Amount of the check in words
The written amount shows the amount being paid in words. The word "dollars" is usually printed at the end of the line. Use the word "and" to separate dollar amounts from cents.(#4 on the picture)
