The protocol for performing one-person rescue CPR based on the standard and guidelines of the American Heart Association is as follows: 1) Establish unresponsiveness by gently shaking and shouting at the victim; 2) Position the patient on his or her back on a hard surface to facilitate CPR; 3) Perform chest compressions by positioning yourself to one side of the patient and placing the hands properly; 4) Open the airway by tilting the head back; 5) Establish breathlessness by placing an ear of the patient's nose and mouth and looking toward the patient's chest; 6) Perform rescue breathing by putting the palm of the hand on the victim's forehead and using the thumb and fingers to pinch the victim's nostrils shut; 7) Establish circulatory inadequacy by palpating the carotid artery; 8) Continue to perform chest compression as detailed in step 3; and 9) Reassess after five complete cycles of compressions and ventilations.
