Liquid

has a certain volume but it has no shape of its own. A liquid takes the shape of its container. Milk and water are liquids

Gases

A gas, like liquids, does not have a shape of its own. Unlike a liquid, a gas does not have a volume of its own. When bubbles break, the gases spread out and take up more space.

How is a solution different from other mixtures?

A solution is a mixture which one substance spreads evenly throughout another substance. (Salt and water mixed together). A mixture is two or more substances mixed together but can easily separated.

Matter

All living and nonliving things are made of matter

Thick and thin pretzels

Both are made up of matter. Both have mass and take up space. One is thicker than the other. The thin pretzel has less volume

Mixtures

Can have different kinds and amounts of substances. A salad can have different amounts of each vegetable or different kinds of vegetables

What are two physical properties of matter?

Color, shape, size and mass

Solid

Has a shape and a volume of its own. Your desk and books are solids

How are mass and volume of an object different?

Mass is the amount of material that an object has in it. Volume is the amount of space that matter takes up. Both a thin and thick pretzel have mass, but the thin pretzel takes up less space than the thick pretzel.

State or form that matter has

One important property of matter is the state or form matter has. Matter has three states: solid, liquid and gas.

Mixtures

One kind of mixture forms when you mix salt and water together. the salt dissolves in the water. When it dissolves, the salt breaks into tiny bits that are too small to see. These bits spread out evenly throughout the water.

Solution

a mixture in which one substance spreads evenly throughout another substance

Matter

anything that has mass and takes up space

Property

something about matter that can be observed and tells you what the matter is like. Color, shape, size and mass are some physical properties of matter. These properties can be used to describe or sort mater

Another property of matter

the ability of some matter to float in a gas or liquid. An onion can float and a potato can not

mass

the amount of material that an object has in it

Volume

the amount of space that matter takes up

Mixture

two or more substances that are mixed together but can easily be separated
