First Person Point of View

Objective 3rd Person

a type of third person writing where the narrator is not part of the story. The narrator tells what happens but doesn't know what any of the characters are thinking or feeling. I didn't like the objective third person narration in this story. I wanted to hear about at least one character's thoughts and feelings.

Omniscient 3rd Person

a type of third person writing where the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all characters in a story. I think stories told in omniscient third person are a little spooky! How can any one narrator know everything characters think and feel?

Limited Third Person

a type of third person writing where the narrator tells what happens to all characters but only knows one character's thoughts and feelings. I like to write stories in limited third person. That way my narrator can focus on one character's thoughts and feelings but still stand outside of the story.

Third Person

a writing style where the narration is not done by one of the characters. The narrator often uses the pronouns "he," "she" or "it." The movie started with a narrator talking in third person about the characters, using the pronouns "he" and "she" instead of their names.

First Person

a writing style where the narrator is one of the characters in the story, often using the pronouns "I, me, or my". The narrator used the pronoun "I" in the first sentence, so I knew it was told in first person.

Second Person

a writing style where the narrator speaks to the reader directly, often using "you." Stefanie would have liked the book better if it hadn't been told in second person. She finds it distracting when the narrator speaks directly to the reader.

Perspective

how the characters view and process what's happening within the story

Voice

the form or a format through which narrators tell their stories shaped by point of view, writing style and attitude

Narrator

the person who tells a story.

Point of View

the position from which a narrator tells a story or a writer presents information. It may be first, second or third person. The main character in this novel is a teenage girl who just moved to a new town, and the story is told from her point of view.
