What if a cemetery requires an outer burial container and the deceased was an Orthodox Jew, what would the family request?
A grave box constructed of wood would be appropriate for the Orthodox Jew; however, many perpetual care cemeteries require a substantial outer burial container made of concrete, metal, or plastic. If required, one of these containers can be inverted in the grave so that it covers the casket- or- the casket can be placed in the container, the container filled with soil, then the cover placed on the container. It is desirable to have the casket in direct contact with the soil.

What are the restrictions placed on embalming, casket choice, and dressing for the Jews?
EMBALMING Jewish tradition frowns on embalming. If civil laws require embalming, these laws supersede the laws and regulations of the synagogue. If the body is embalmed, the blood is placed in containers and placed in the casket with the body. Reform and Conservative Jews do not place restriction on embalming one of their members. Verbal permission should be obtained at the first call, followed by written permission. There will be times which the Rabbi or family prefer the body NOT to be embalmed. CASKET CHOICEThe Orthodox Jews require a casket made entirely of wood and containing no metal parts (aron). They don?t believe in preserving the body because as the body decays, the soul ascends to Heaven. The Reform and Conservative Jews allow the casket to be the choice of the family. During shivah, which food is one most likely to encounter?
Hard-boiled eggs.
Define Shivah, Sholoshim, and Yahrzeit. Describe each event:
SHIVAH - Seven days of mourning following burial. The day of the funeral is the first day and one hour of the seventh day counts as a full day. The shivah period begins after the interment with a simple meal, seudat hava-ah, the meal of consolation. There is a custom to rinse one?s hands with water before entering the house for a meal. Family and friends of the mourners traditionally prove this, and it is not meant to serve as a social function following the funeral. Only family and closest of friend should attend since it is a time to rest and contemplate the day?s events. A party-like atmosphere should not be allowed to develop. The menu for this meal traditionally includes hard-boiled eggs, a symbol of life, and round food, such as lentils that symbolize the turning of the wheel of life, with its ups and downs. Neither meat nor wine, two symbols of joy, should be served at this meal. SHOLOSHIM - a thirty (30) day mourning period of the Jewish faith. This is the second stage of mour

What do the Jews use the back of a shovel to feel in the grave? (instead of the "scoop" part)
The Rabbi reluctantly shovels earth onto the casket and then lays the shovel down to be picked up by members of the family who also shovel dirt onto the casket until the casket is covered. They use the back of the shovel instead of the ?scoop? part to indicate a reluntance to perform this ritual. Shoveling the earth is an action of finality and closure. Our local rabbi informed me once "you're burying a loved one, not a pipe in a ditch". Makes sense to me!
