Dream Analysis

Manifest Content: The main story Latent Content: The underlying part that determines why your dreaming about a certain thing. Its what therapists like to draw out of patients.

Transference

Patient transfers characters that may be seen with family members. Such as those with mothers/fathers.

Projective Tests

Rorschach-Showing an ambiguous stimulus and the patient must come with a story to it. Thematic Apperception- A projective personality test. Such as asking a person to tell a story about various pictures.

Resistance

The patient resists the therapist because you don't want to explain it to him.

Group Therapies

Treating clients in groups. It is economical, can help practice with interpersonal interactions, and can bring social support from the group. Such as "I am not so odd after all because others are worse/same". Though there is less rapport and can reveal confidential information to others.

Word Association

Using unusual words or blocking.

Humanistic Therapies

1. Non-directive or Client-Centered Therapy-From Carl Rogers this therapy is when the therapist and patient are on equal terms and the patient tries to solve his or her own issues. 2. Client-therapist vs. Patient-doctor 3. Therapist is sympathetic sounding board 4. Therapist gives non-judgmental positive regard.

Rapport

A connection or bond made with the therapist.

Freudian Slip

A problem that arises unconsciously. Ex. Calling your girlfriend by your mother's name.

Existential Therapy

Asking a patient about personal things such as love, meaning of life, death, etc. It may reveal key aspects. Such as saying we will not get out alive.

Cognitive (Rational) Therapies

Inappropriate thinking is the cause of the problem. Therapy consists of changing internal thoughts by reexamining assumptions. Not concerned about what caused the problem. Rational thinking can solve the problem. Do no blame others, you have the ability to change. This is all to establish realistic goals and interpretations of a situation.

Hypnosis

Introduced by Franz Anton Mesmer, this process puts a patient in a state of consciousness where the he or she has no ability of having voluntary movements and is highly responsive to suggestions. They use this to make them regress to a certain point in time. Sometime used.

Stream of Consciousness. Talking freely about something. Therapists try to catch these.

Psychoanalysis

The method of psychological therapy originated by Sigmund Freud in which free association, dream interpretation, and analysis of resistance and transference are used to explore repressed or unconscious impulses, anxieties, and internal conflicts, in order to free psychic energy for mature love and work.

Modern Psychodynamic Therapy

There is a shorter time course and is more concerned with relationships.

Counter Transference

When the therapist starts to delve into his or her own problems. Or the therapist redirects the patient towards a different path.
