1st tri - identifies what must be given up to assume role 2nd tri - identifies with infant, learns self denial 3rd tri - questions ability to become a good mother

1st tri - mother accepts idea of pregnancy but not of an infant yet 2nd tri- sensation of fetal movement, mother acknowledges fetus as a separate entitiy 3rd tri - mother longs to hold infant and becomes tired of pregnancy
The maternal role of ensuring safe passage throughout pregnancy includes:
1st tri - women focuses on herself not the fetus 2nd tri - attachment to the fetus develops 3rd tri - concerns for self and fetus as a unit evolve participation in positive self-care related to diet, exercise and overall well-being through out pregnancy.
The maternal role of seeking acceptance of infant by others:
1st tri - works toward acceptance by self and others 2nd tri - family needs to relate to the fetus as a family member 3rd tri- unconditional acceptance without rejection

Anxiety about labor/birth; nesting occurs, bursts of energy
During pregnancy a woman has many psychological adaptations that must be made. The nurse must remember that the baby's father is also experiencing the pregnancy and has adaptations that must be made. Some fathers actually have symptoms of the pregnancy along with the mothers. What is this called
Couvade syndrome

During the 2nd trimester women become hyper-focused on themselves and their fetus. Sometimes withdrawing from outside world appearing passive to family and friends. Considered normal introspective behavior.
What classifies ambivalence during pregnancy?
Experiencing a full spectrum of emotions, often abruptly; conflicting feelings at the same time. Most common in 1st trimester and usually resolves by 2nd trimester.
