Question Answer Relationship (QAR) - Four Types of Questions
Critical Question
Author and Me; The answer is a combination of what the reader knows (background knowledge) and what the author says and how that information fits together (analyze).
Creative/Evaluative
On My Own; The answer is inside the student, not the text. The student must think beyond the text and create an original idea or must evaluate the information and make a decision.
Literal Question
Right There; Information is clearly stated by the author in the text
Inferential Question
Think and Search; The answer comes from a combination of information found in different parts of the text. When those bits of information are together, they imply or infer the answer.
