Gustave Caillebotte
Caillebotte was born in 1842 to an extremely wealthy family. Didn't have to sell paintings to make a living. Inherits family's wealth when parents died. He actually bought paintings from Monet and Renoir to help them make a living.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Hung out in spaces full of people, upper class with his family The type of people who attended the theater where upper middle crust people, and Renoir depicted them in his paintings, women where sat in front on display, as they where a reflection of their husband, they reflected the social statues of the husband. The loge, is the first painting in the motif of people at the theater, People went to the theater to be entertained but also to be seen with their peers ・painted on porcelain when younger
Edgar Degas
・Dandy/flaneur ・Degas moves the gaze from the viewers perspective all over the place in the theater, where it be on the main floor, in a box , back stage or in the band box. Different location than Renoir, Cassatte, others interested in the same subject matter. ・He tends to depict women with more free, animalistic features ・Work of a voyeur, walks around backstage spying on girls, paints them while they are unaware of it
Claude Monet
・Monumental size of his "plein-air" paintings he experimented with for a long time ・wanted others to think his paintings were done outdoors, despite having done most of them in the studio ・to show this, he'd paint with quick brush strokes, making the paintings "finished but not complete" ・gives impression that it was painting outdoors
Edouard Manet
・People that Manet encountered in the Bohemian neighborhoods, ended up on his canvas. Ellen andre frequented Manet's canvas's in his cafe paintings ・Manet focusing more on the crowd in the cafe's and breweries etc, while Degas focuses on the entertainment of the place, whats happening on the stage and behind the scenes ・Suzon, modeled for Manet while she worked as a server during his last years ・Stage performances attracted the audiences, captured by realist artists; Theaters where wildly circulated among Parisian people ・Plain-air paintings, Manet and Monet painted each other. Manet also gave the impression that these paintings where painted out doors when intact they where painted in the studio ・The population of Paris moved from the city to Argenteuil because of the industry movement to the country, at first the country side was for leisure over time it grew into a place for factories etc (suburbs) ・Manets rendering of paintings where a lot tighter, with a flatter look, figure and space wise in comparison to Monet's renderings which where rough and loose ・One of the differences between Monet and Manet is Monet never used black because he believed it didn't exist in nature while Manet's canvas are riddled with black
