Anti-Aliasing

(in computer graphics) a technique used to add greater realism to a digital image by smoothing jagged edges on curved lines and diagonals.

Bitmap Type

A Graphics Interchange Format and a JPEG are examples of graphic image file types that contain bit maps.

Sans Serif Font

A category of typefaces that do not use serifs, small lines at the ends of characters. Popular sans serif fonts include Helvetica, Avant Garde, Arial, and Geneva. Serif fonts include Times Roman, Courier, New Century Schoolbook, and Palatino.

Baseline Shift

A shifting baseline (also known as sliding baseline) is a type of change to how a system is measured, usually against previous reference points (baselines), which themselves may represent significant changes from an even earlier state of the system

Outline Type

A type of font made from basic outlines of each character. The outlines are scaled into actual characters (bitmaps) before printing.

Serif Font

A typeface with serifs is called a serif typeface (or serifed typeface). A typeface without serifs is called sans serif or sans-serif, from the French sans, meaning "without". Some typography sources refer to sans-serif typefaces as "Grotesque" (in German "grotesk") or "Gothic", and serif typefaces as "Roman".

Monotype Spacing

In 'monotype letter spacing' (used in older typewriters) the horizontal space between two characters is fixed, regardless of their shape or contours. Also called tracking.

Font Family

In HTML and XHTML, a font face or font family is the typeface that will be applied by a web browser to some text. The font is relevant for the display of text on the screen, on a printer or another device.

Proportional Spacing

In this encyclopedia, the default text is a proportional typeface, and tables are "monospaced," in which all characters have the same fixed width. See kerning. Proportional Vs. Monospaced. In proportional spacing, the I takes up less horizontal space than the M as in the word "immersive."
