- a folk rock band -prime example of harmonies and vocals being more important then messages -famous for their close vocal harmonies and turbulent relationships -John and Michelle were married and Cass and Denny were together but michelle and denny started having an affair and band got torn apart -"California Dream' became civil rights anthem for the movement -"Monday Monday" number 1 hit they had that john wrote in 20 minutes -all dead besides michelle
Counterculture Movement
-San Fran/Nothern Cali was known for their liberal, laid back atmosphere which drew muscians -during this time the war was going on and the youth didnt understand it they wanted to promote love, peace, and understanding -they became to be nown as hippies and hippies were usually eco friendly, vegetarian, open minded, rejected middle class values, and loved drugs -they came to the public in san fran in jan 1967 at Human Bein in Golden Gate park and then really started in the 1967 summer of love whuch was kicked off by the montegomery pop festival -led to a new style of music known as psychedlic rock
Big Brother and Holding Co.
-a band Janis Joplin was in -they had their breakthrough in the Montgomery Pop Festival -second album Cheap Thrills was a huge success had hit song "Piece of my Heart"
Altamont Free Concert
-a free concert put on by the Rolling Stones in San Fran in response to woodstock because they couldnt make it to that concert -it took place in the altamont speedway and floor was made of concret and asphalt -they hired hells angels motorcycle gang as their secutiry guards -pretty much biggest mistake in rock n roll history -4 deaths and 4 births -really tarnished their image
The Grateful Dead
-a quinsequential san fran psychedelic rock group -they were all about fun and drugs and promoted peace and love -their songs were about american myths, touched, upon a bunch of different genres, and "exporled places other artists didnt even know existed" -Jerry Garcia was the leader of the band and he was like a religion to same fans -they gained a cult like following that followed them from concert to concert they called themselves deadheads -they had 2 very popular albums in 1970 -they were mostly a live band and were one of the first "jam bands" that used concerts as an artistic outlet, every concert was different and lasted 6-9 hours they traveled with 6 tons of sound equipment -jerry garcia died i 1995 of a heartattack -on jan 31st 1970 the police raided their hotel and arrested 19 people for drug posession the song "Truckin' was written about it
Acid/ Psychedelic Rock
-a type of music that came out of hippie culture -was music that was meant to be consumed with drugs -center of it was run down neighborhood in san fran
Crosby, Stills, and Nash
-all members of the band were inducted into the hall of fame twice -Crosby (Byrds), Stills (Buffalo), and Nash (Hollies) -they had ne album with Neil Young as well and it was considered to be perfect but Young quit b/c he wanted less folk and more rock -"Ohio" about a shooting at Kent University during a student protest against Nixon -4 guys from 4 different countries
Creedence Clearwater Revival
-also went by creedance or ccr -they were the opposite of the grateful dead -much more commercial, song oriented band -they sold over 26 million albums in the us and therefore are still a staple in radio airplay today -John Fogerty was the member of the band that wrote most of their songs -in 1970 alone they had 3 top ten albums and 4 hit singles -eventually John Fogerty gave up all his publishing rights just to leave the band beause they didnt get along -they were the founders of swamp rock- they incorporated blues and rock and had an odd fashion that didnt fit in san fran
Jeff Beck
-an amazing guitar hero -was a vitruso on guitar a true technition, more of a guitar player then singer -got his start on the yardbirds -eventually fired and went on to record an album with rod stewart and ron wood that is regarded as the perfect mix between rock and blues -has had a spetacular solo career
the doors
-an odd band that came out of la, there was nthing folkie about them -their songs were experimental and progressive/poetry/most songs were in minor key and featured organ/ derived from blues and driven by art rock/ dark and gloomy lyrics -only band that didnt have one happy song -fifith album called Morrison Hotel after lead singer -"Hello I Love You" shot to number 1 and was a million selling record -after 5 years the band was in dissaray because of morrisons drug problems
The Who
-began in the early 60s but didnt gain popularity until late 1960s mostly in part due to their hugely successful album Tommy which was the first rock opera album -they started out as a song oriented band but turned into an album oriented one -they used synthesizers and keyboards -"I can see for miles" was their breakthrough hit -crazy on stage antics -woodstock was the turning point in their career pushing them to stardom
Folk Rock
-bloomed in California but instead of Bob Dylan social commentary focused more on melodies and harmonies then messages -The Byrds were prime example
Gram Parsons
-born in Winter Havens, FL and attended harvard -invented cosmic american music -was in the Byrds for a year and then went on to form the flying burrito brothers -drugs eventually ruined his life and he died at the age of 26 -credited with having founded country rock and alt rock
Jimmy Page
-carried over the torch from the yardbirds to led zeppelin -lots of mystique around him -not the best solo artist but when he was in Led Zepellin no one could comapare ""Dazed and Confused" early example of plagarism that followed him for the rest of his career
The 27 Club
-celebrities that died at the age of 27 -Kurt Cobain, Brian Jones, Robert Johnson, Pete Ham, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Ron Mckeman, and Jim Morrison
Ashbury and Haight
-center of psychedelic music/hippie culture was a rundown neighborhood in San Fran by Golden Gate Park on the intersection of Ashbury and Haight
The Yardbirds
-famous for having housed 3 guitar heros: Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck -Clapton from 63-65, Beck from 65-66, and Page from 66-68 -Clapton was the guitarist for the most fruitful period of the band's career -Page eventually was the only member left in the band -blues oriented but also pop -"For Your Love" song with both Beck and Page
Frank Zappa
-great guitar player -self taught composer and performer -music hard to catergoize and listen to -inventor of art rock
Pete Townshed
-guitar hero who played for The Who -underated compared to others but was a great guitar player and songwriter
Santana
-latin rock -got incredible exposure from Woodstock -their 1st 3 albums were blockbusters -Carlos Sanatana is the only continuous member and founder he is the heart and soul of the band -Carlos is known as the king of latin rock and is amazing guitar player -at the height of their career in 1971 two members left to go start Journey
Jimi Hendrix
-left handed but played a right handed guitar upsidedown -started out backing up little richard in his band -formed band called jimi hendrix epirience -died in 1970 of an overdose -considered one of greatest guitarists all time because of his unseen potential -stage presence and skills were unprecedented -people said he was a shaman, deep, and perceptive -are you experienced is one of the best albums of all time -he was known as a womanizer wrot "foxy lady" -"Great instrumentalist of rock n roll"- Bono -did many bob dylan cover songs
Buffalo Springfield
-less successful folk rock band -consisted of members Neil Young and Stephen Stills -"For What its Worth" became iconic Vietnam protest song -Stephen Stills attended Gainesville High School and went to UF for a bit before dropping out
John Fogerty
-member of the band creedance -he was the lead singer / songwriter -the band actually performed at woodstock but most people dont know because he was not satisfied with their performance so they were not put in the movie -he gave up his publishing rights to the entire crr catalog just to leave the band -he is a very interesting figure in rock n roll and made a comeback -got into a famous lawsuit with saul saentz for plagarizing himself but ended up winning the case it is an important case in copy right enringement
Fillmore Auditorium/ Bill Graham
-nicknamed the sacred store -special club that san fran had -usually 3 bands would play here a night -owned bill bill graham who was the biggest promoter of rock n roll in san fran and then NY -Bill managed sanatana, jefferson airplane, and brother and others -he was born in berlin, raised in the bronx, and died in a helicopter crash in 1991
The Byrds
-one of the first huge folk rock bands in america propelled to fame by 2 #1 hits -their vocal harmonies and McGuinn's jangly guitar were huge influences on rock n roll -Roger Mcguinn and David Crosby were the 2 main members of the band -They were a mix between the beatles and bob dylan -Roger Mcguinn was the only consistent member -their cover of ''Mor Tamborine Man" by bob dylan made it to number one before bob dylan had a number 1 of his own -Americas answer to the british invasion -Gram Parsons in band for a year and their album with him showed a significant style change

-one of the first songs the Rolling Stones did in 1963 that was written by Lennon and McCartney
The Rolling Stones
-one of the greatest rock n roll band of all time -oldest band that is still together -their longetivy , success, and popularity is a true testiment to rock n roll -Mick and Kieth grew up together and knew eachother since elementary school -Brian Jones picked Rolling Stones for the name of the band after the muddy waters song -Charlie Watts was the drummer and Bill Wyman was the bassist -Ian Stewart and Brian Jones were the founders of the band but they eventually fired Jones from the band for being an abusive husband, he eventually drowned in his swimming pool -They replaced him with Mick Taylor and then Ron Wood, Ron Wood ended up becoming an essential band member -Had stable lineup for 18 years until 1994 when Wyman retired -they started out by covering "Come on" by Chuck Berry -they started out just doing cover songs and did "I wanna be your man" which was written by Lennon and mcCartney in 1963 -they had a bad boy image unlike the Beatles and were famous for all dating the same woman Anita Pallenberg -1967 was a bad year for them -but 1968 was a peak of their career and they had 4 consecutive hit albums -after their first album they let go of jones and their album featired the new members in the band -"Honkey Tonkiny Woman" was the most risky song to get airplay up to that point in history -in Novemeber 27, 1994 they played in Ben Hill Griffen Stadium
Janis Joplin
-one of the queens of bay area -born in texas -the had a huge, great bluey voice -she was always into drugs and alcohol -she was picked up by Big Brother and Holding Co a well known psychedlic group -she then went on to have 2 solo albums -the second one Pearl was released after her death and she became the second person ever to have a number 1 song after their death with "Me and Bobby Mcgee" -regarded as one of the finest vocalists of all time -died at the age of 27
Grace Slick
-one of the queens of the bay area -born in illinois -started singing in her husbands band great society at age 27 -known for her being wild, was the first person to say mother f*cker on live tv during a performance on the dick cavetts show -joined jefferson airplane soon after her divorce -oldest female rnr muscian still alive today -writted from music in 1990s but still works in visual arts -graduate from Finch college and was invited to dinner at Nixon's house by his daughter Tricia and she brought famous political activist Abbie Hoffman as her date and they had a plan to put lsd in the tea but they got caught before entering the white house
Eric Clapton
-only 3 time inductee into the rock n roll hall of fame -inducted for yardbirds (63-65) cream (66-69) and solo artist (74-) -catchphrase "eric clapton is god" -had the nickname of slowhand because he played the guitar so fast it looked like his hand wasnt moving -he started out with the yardbirds when he was only 17 he wasnt a songwriter at first but he became one -left yeardbirds because he wanted to be a more serious blues man -was obsessed with Robert Johnson -Cream was one of the first super rgoups ad was a powerful trio -was part of many super groups that had only one album each -Blind Faith made one of the best blues albums of all time - He wrote many secret love songs to the love of his life Patti Boyd who was married to george harrison -"Layla" was a song he wrote for her tat was 7 minutes one half was wrote the other was piano
The Kinks
-produced hits in 3 different decades -pioneered punk rock and garage rock -Ray Davies and Dave Davies were brothers from england who formed the band -they became the fashion police for british rock and Carnaby Street -song "lola" about coca cola -Ray Davies wrote/sang/produced almost all their stuff
Tommy
-said to be the first rock opera album ever - it was a triple album -about a death, dumb and blind kid -turned into a movie/musical/ franchise elton john starred in the movie -credit as being one of the first concept albums
"I Can't Get No Satisfaction"
-song written by the Glimmer Twins -point in rolling stones career where they went from boys to men -their first #1 hit in the US -written in Clearwater, FL -Keith woke up in the middle of the night with a riff in his head and one piece of the lyrics so he recorded it on his portable recorder and then went back to sleep -he didnt even remember he had done it in the morning
Led Zeppellin
-started by Jimmy Page when he became the only member of the Yardbirds left -tried to name the band "New Yardbirds" but they couldnt because of legal issues -got the name for the band when kieth moon said that the band "would go over like a lead balloon" -their first album was untamed and underproduced but thats what gave it its charm -their second album Led Zeppellin II is considered one of the best rock albums of all time by critics and contained their only top 10 hit -they faced lots of legal troubles and have been sued almost 30 times (Willie Dixon sued them for "whole lotta love")
Duane Allman
-started out his career as a studio musician in Muscle Shoals it is said that he camped out of Fame studios till they gave him a job -ended up being one of the hottest talents in america and a guitar hero -formed the Allman Brothers Band with his brpther -grew up in Daytona
Gimme Shelter
-the Altamont concert was filmed and was supposed to be made into a movie of this name -ended up being more of a documentary about the tragedy
Sly and the Family Stone
-the first funk band -one of the first multi racial bands they became associated with the civil rights movement -they represented a darker/gloomier side to the hippie culture -"Everyday People" plea for equality -their music showed **** in the fact they had a strong baseline, strong horn section, big chorus, and they opned the door for more funk groups to come -"Family Affair" was the first song on the bilboard to use a drum machine -were reunited in the grammys in 2006 but was very weird reunion first time they were together since sly stone left the ban in 1971
Jim Morrison
-the lead singer of the doors -mysterious/charismatic/troublesome -he WAS the doors -often did things on stage that got him in trouble, even went to jail for them -briefly attended fsu -1991 documenatry and about and the band , got critcally acclaimed but lots of historical inaccuracies , the band threatenedf to sue the director -died of heartattack/heroin use in bathtub in Paris -when he died the band died with him -died at 27 (the 27 club)
Mick Jagger/ Kieth Richards
-they went to primary school together and then re met in college and realized they both had a passion for american rock -slowly took leadership away from brian jones and onto themselves -beame a very successful songwritting team and became known as the glimmer twins
Jefferson Airplane (Starship)
-this is the band Grace Slick was a part of -they are distinct because they had 3 different period with 3 different music styles and 3 different names -their manager was Bill Graham -their album Surrealistic Pillow was a huge hit and contained the hit "somebody to love" -their song "white rabbit' is the psychedelic it gets -they stayed together till 1974 and then changed their name to starship to sound more futureistic
The Glimmer Twins
-what the songwriting team of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger came to be known as -positioned themselves as one of the most unique songwriting teams in history -their first big hit was "I Cant Get No Satisfaction"
Monterey/Woodstock
showcased rock musics social and politcal sides -played an integral role in educating people abut movement and also 2 very first grand scale rock concerts of era 1. Montgomery was for hmanitarian purposes/ artists didnt get paid/ kicked off summer of love and hippie free love era. 2. Woodstock- the most famous and popular music concert in rock history because of its scale and respresented culmination of counterculture. great vibe/ no violence/ thought it was the beginning but turned out to be the end
