Scale Drawings-Math
What is an example of a scale drawing?
1 inch: 300 miles, meaning one inch on the map equals 300 miles in real life.
1 in ÷ 12 inches = x in ÷ 36 inches
3 = x
What are scale drawings?
A scale drawing of an object is a drawing with dimensions that are proportional to the object's actual dimensions. Scale drawings are identical in shape to the actual object, but they are not the same size.
The original logo is a square with sides of 1.25 inches. After scaling, the logo must have a perimeter of 32 feet. This action is called a reduction/an enlargement/a 1: 1 representation and the scale factor is 6.4 feet per inch/25.6 feet per inch/0.04 inches per foot/0.16 inches per foot.
An enlargement, 6.4 feet per inch
Wes is petitioning to get a yield sign installed at an intersection near his home. He plans to make a scale drawing of the sign to submit to the town council. The length of each side of a yield sign is 36 inches. If Wes draws the sign using a scale of 1 inch to 12 inches, how long will each side of the sign be in the drawing?
He is using a scale of 1 inch to 12 inches. This means 1 inch on the scale drawing is equal to 12 inches on the actual sign. The length each side on the side is 36 inches.
scale: 1 inch to 2 feet scaled area: 3 square inches
actual area = 12 square feet
scale: 1 inch to 2 feet scaled area: 4 square inches
actual area = 16 square feet
scale: 1 inch to 3 feet scaled area: 3 square inches
actual area = 27 square feet
scale: 1 inch to 3 feet scaled area: 4 square inches
actual area = 36 square feet
Or we can use the commutative property and say
actual dimensions ÷ scale factor = scale dimensions
If the scale factor is equal to/different than 1, the object is the same size in the drawing and in the real world.
equal to
If the scale factor is less/greater than 1, the scaled object is smaller/bigger than the actual object. It is an enlargement/reduction.
greater, bigger, enlargement
If the scale factor is greater/less than 1, the scaled object is smaller/ bigger than the actual object. It is an enlargement/reduction.
less, smaller, reduction
A scale factor is the ratio of
scale dimensions ÷ actual dimensions = scale factor
