Science chapter 1 lesson 1
What is a vacuoles?
A cell structure used to store food, water and waste.
What is the nucleus?
A large spherical structure found in the center of the cell. It controls all of the activity in the cell.
What is a cell membrane?
A layer around the outside of the cell.
What are organelles?
All cells have stuctures called organelles that work together to help perform life processes. These organelles have jobs that must be done to keep the cell alive.
What are both plants and animals made of?
Both plants and animals are made of cells. Animal cells include nucleus, cytoplasm, vacuoles, cell membrane and mitochondria. Plant cells have all of those things, but have two extra parts to the cell called the cell wall and chloroplasts.
The _____________ ______________ is a layer around the outside of the cell.
Cell membrane
The _________ ___________ is an additional layer around the outside of the plant.
Cell wall
Plants, animals, and all living things are made of ___________.
Cells
A green chemical called ____________ makes chloroplasts green.
Chlorophyll
Mitochondria turn food into _____________ for the cell to use.
Energy
Animals have to eat other living things to get __________ and ________.
Energy, food
Plants need something in their cells to provide __________ ________.
Extra support
Plant leaf cells produce __________ for the plant.
Food
What is cytoplasm?
Inside the cell membrane is a gel-like substance that supports the organelles.
The ___________ controls all of the activity in the cell.
Nucleus
Cytoplasm supports all of the ______________ inside the cell.
Organelles
Organelles in plant cells that turn energy from sunlight into food are called ___________.
Photosynthesis
The cells of ____________ are not the same as animal cells.
Plants
A cell is a ____________ of a living thing that can carry out the basic processes of life.
Smallest unit
The large central vacuoles of plant cells provide support by __________ _________.
Storing water
What is mitochondria?
Structures within a cell that break down food and turn it into energy.
The ____________ store food, water, and wastes.
Vacuole
