Science: Gravity and Motion
If all objects exert gravitational force on all other objects, why doesn´t the gravitational attraction between your hand and your pencil keep it from falling out of your hand and landing on the floor?
Because, the earthś centers gravitational force is stronger than the gravitational attraction between your hand and the pencil.
why does the moon have a greater effect on the earth than the sun does?
Because, the moon is closer to the earth than the sun is.
What are the two factors that affect the force of gravity?
Distance and Mass
In what direction does gravity cause objects to accelerate?
Downward/toward center of earth.
Decribe the proportional relationships between gravitational force and mass and distance?
Gravitational force between objects decreases as the distance increases. Gravitational force between objects increases as the mass of the objects increases.
What force holds an object around another object?
Gravity
Will doubling mass or doubling distance have a greater affect on the gravitational force?
It will get stronger if mass increases. It will get weaker if distance increases.
What would happen to a satellite if Earths gravity suddenly disappeared?
It would float off into space.
Objects with less distance have more or less gravitational force between them?
More
Objects with more mass have more or less gravitational force between them?
More
The weight of an object give by calculationg F=mg, where where g=9.8 m/s(squared). If an object has a mass of 0.800 kg, what is its weight?
7.84 because, 9.8 times .800 = 7.84.
What is gravity?
A force of attraction between objects due to thier mass.
what does the law of universal gravitation state?
All objects attract each other through gravitational force. The strength of the force depends on mass and distance.
What forces are acting on an object during free fall?
Only gravity.
What term describes the path an object takes around the earth, like a satellite or space shuttle?
Orbit
If two objects are exerting gravitational force on one another, what would happen if the mass of one suddenly increased?
The gravitational force would increase as well.
If two objects have small masses, will the gravitational force between them be strong or weak? Why?
Weak because, the larger the mass, the stronger the gravitational pull.
