by voluntarily or involuntarily attending to or ignoring certain aspects of information in our environment we can either be more likely to notice fine differences or to miss large differences in the stimuli
sensory overload
excessive stimulation, can lead to fatigue and mental confusion; try and block out things while focusing on whats important
selective attention
the focusing of attention on selected aspects of the environment and the blocking out of others
habituation
the process of gradually adapting to stimuli that do not change; our sensory systems are built to detect change
