About the SternaLock Blu
Every year, over one million people worldwide undergo open-heart surgery in the fight against cardiovascular disease. American Heart Association reports that each year in the United States, over 700,000 open-heart surgeries are performed requiring mid-line sternotomies. The SternaLock Blu System applies the proven principles of locking rigid fixation to sternal closure and offers a rigid fixation alternative for mid-line sternotomies as well as a variety of minimally invasive approaches including the mini-sternotomy and mini-thoracotomy. The SternaLock Blu plates thinner and anatomical design help address the challenges associated with fixating a 90 degree sternal incision or rib osteotomy. The plates increase stability at the osteotomy site, while still allowing for minimally invasive access. Studies have shown that rigid fixation when compared to wire closure provide: -Increased stability -Greater strength -Reduced sternal separation
Instrumentation
Instruments include: -Wide, Narrow, Large & normal reduction Forceps -Small & Large plate bender -Plate & Wire cutter -2.4mm Plate Holding Wand -Plate Holding Forceps -Screw Sizer
Features of the SternaLock Blu
See Picture --->
Screws (2.4mm & 2.7mm)
The 2.4mm & 2.7mm screws range from 8mm to 20mm. Emergency screws used if initial screw's thread doesn't fit right at first.
Plate and Thread Locking
The Screw tip engages into the posterior cortex of the sternum, then locks into the plate at a 90 degree angle, rigidly fixating the bone halves together.
Low Profile Plates
The plates are 1.6mm titanium plates.

CT Scans SternaLock vs Wires
- Well apposed sternum with SternaLock -Separation of sternal body with wires
Plates are Double Sided
-The designs are available to facilitate the fixation of midline sternotomies and mini thoracotomies. -The plates are double sided and can be bent to fit the patients anatomy.
Surgical echniques
1. Measure sternal depth where plate placement will occur. -three points: Manubrium, Body, Xiphoid 2. Wire the Manubrium and Xiphoid to reduce the top and bottom of the sternum. 3. Select plate configuration. Place the lower x plate as inferiorly as possible on the sternum. 4. Plates are two sided to facilitate placement on the sternum. 5. Select screws based on sternal depth. 6. Insert screws into plate.
