Search

To be a safe driver, you must know what is happening around your must look ahead, to the sides and behind the vehicle. While your intended travel path is your main area of focus, searching the roadside gives you additional traffic clues. Keeping your eyes active helps you resist distractions, reduces in attention and prevents a fixed stare. Search Ahead - The distance you look ahead is your visual lead. This is an area 20 to 30 seconds from the front of the vehicle. Having a good visual lead and using good searching skills helps you see changes in your travel path and identify alternative paths of travel. - To develop a visual lead, pick out a fixed roadside object well ahead and begin counting, "one-thousand-and-one-one-thousand-and two, etc., until you reach the object. The number of second you have control is the number of seconds ahead that you were looking. - Searching helps you see problems ahead that may cause you to change speed or roadway position when searching ahead you should look for road and surface characteristics, traffic control markings and devices, and other roadway users. This will help you identify potential dangerous situations in your path of travel.

Evaluating

Once you have identified the hazards(s), the next step is to quickly determine if they could affect you. Ask yourself "what if?" Think about how hazards can interact to create risks for you. Anticipate potential problems and have a plan to reduce or eliminate the risk. Think about the dangers around your vehicle and what adjustments you must make within speed or lane position to maintain your safety. You must leave yourself time to react if a dangerous situation occurs. As soon as you identify an object, condition or area blocked vision that could cause a problem, you must decide what to do. You should choose the action that involves the lowest possible level of risk. What actions will make the situation more manageable? Maybe you should change your speed or position, increase you visibility or sound a warning. You must combine several of these actions for good risk management.

SEE stands for:

Search, Evaluate, Execute

S.E.E

Space Management System

Ws#1 26. I'm driving, it is best to have a space of at least ...... feet on both sides of your vehicle.

4 so 8 in total

Ws#1 60. When all or part of a highway traffic lane is closed for construction, maintenance, or surveying, the speed limit is .................., unless otherwise posted.

45 mph

Construction Vehicles

These are found at or nearby construction sites. They are very large and loud. Proceed with caution around them. Many construction vehicles start out slowly and because of heavy loads they haul, acceleration takes longer (same as deceleration, just like a semi). Remember the following in order to drive safely around construction vehicles: 1. Do not tailgate 2. Driver may not see you in his side mirrors 3. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and any construction vehicle(s). If a construction vehicle is following: 1. Keep checking in the rear view mirror 2. Do not stop quickly unless necessary 3. Remember construction vehicles need A LOT of braking distance.

Executing: Adjusting your speed

- A reasonable and proper speed for any set of conditions is one that provides the driver a safe path of travel. The ideal speed provides time and space to brake or steer to a safe alternative path 4 to 8 seconds ahead if an emergency develops. - If you drive too fast for conditions, then you will not be able to stay on your intended path of travel or stop in time to avoid crashing. - Traveling to fast for conditions also makes it difficult for other drivers and pedestrians to predict your actions. - Decelerate — At times the action you take will be to decelerate. The amount of braking needed will vary with the situation. Always check behind you before decelerating or braking in any manner. - Accelerate — Other times the action you take will be to accelerate. For example, when another vehicle is about to hit you from the side or from behind and there is room to the front to get out of danger.

Mirror usage facts

- Any time speed or adjustments are necessary, the driver must consider the location, size and speed of vehicles to the sides/and or rears. - Mirror usage is intended to assist in detection, not gathering detail. - (side note) mirror checks can answer three important questions; Are there vehicles present? If yes, what is the/there location? If yes, what is the size and relative speed of detected vehicles?

Search: Search to the sides

- Concentrating on any one object or situation interferes with your ability to secrecy other potentially dangerous conditions. You should search to the side to make sure other roadway users will not cross you travel pass. You must make a conscious effort to maintain wide-ranging eye movements. - Before entering a intersection, look to the front, left, right and left again for approaching vehicles and pedestrians. - Make sure the travel path is clear beyond the intersection before entering so you will not block it if you have to stop in a line of traffic.

Executing: Communicating your intentions

- Crashes often happen because one driver does not see another driver, or when one driver does something the other driver does not expect. It is important that you let other roadway users know where you are and what you plan to do. When you do communicate, you must do it early enough so other users understand your intentions. Drivers use signaling devices to send most messages. However the communication is performed, it should involve eye-to-eye contact for best results. - Communicate by using the following: - Headlights- Always use you headlights, even during the day, to help other roadway users to see your vehicle more clearly. - Brake lights and taillights- Your brake lights come on when you apply the breaks and inform other drivers that you are slowing or stopping. - Turn signals- Communicate to other users when and which way you are turning. - Hazards flashers (4-way)- Warns other users of a problem or increase awareness of the presence of a vehicle. - Reverse lights- White back-up lights let others know you are backing up. - Horn- Your vehicle's horn can get other users attention if they do not see you.

Search: Look behind you

- Developing skills to check traffic behind you will help avoid collisions when conditions change suddenly. - Check your rear view and side mirrors to see if anyone is following you too closely, approaching fast or preparing to pass. - Look over you left or right shoulder to check a blind spot, the areas around the vehicle that you cannot see from the driver's position or any of you mirrors. - Use your mirrors to check behind your hen you slow down.

Work Zone

- Highly functional areas where any type of work occurs. - An area where roadwork takes place and may involved lane closures, detours, and moving equipment. - Highway work zones are set up according to the type of road and the work to be done on the road. - The work zone can be long or short term and can exist at any time of the year, but most commonly in the summer

Executing: Adjusting your position and/or direction

- In order to change your position within your lane, you will steer to the right or left. A greater change of direction might require a lane change. When you decide to steer away from possible conflict, execute just the right amount of steering input. - Over steering can cause you to lose control of your vehicle, especially at higher speeds. Higher speeds also require more space for the maneuver, but very minimal steering. Under steering can also present a problem. Try to steer just enough to avoid conflict without making jerky or sudden movements. - Drivers who keep a proper space cushions around their vehicle usually have an escape path to steer into, thus reducing the risks.

Evaluating: Potential and critical risks

- Many driving driving situations offer limited choices, so sometimes deciding what action to take is simple, such as when encountering highway control devices and design features, you either conform (comply with the rules) to them or ignore them and accept the consequences. - Other more complex traffic situations may call for more difficult decisions that require you to make critical judgments about you speed and path of travel. You must decide what to do and when. Drivers face increased risk because of roadway conditions, their own actions, the actions of other users or vehicle malfunctions. Your most important decisions will involve how to manage available time and space to minimize risk.

Evaluating: Selecting the best path of travel

- One of your tasks as a driver is to identify your intended path of travel, defined as the space into which you can safely drive your vehicle with lowest possible risk. Selecting a path of travel is a continual process of deciding which options are best. Depending on your circumstances, the shoulder of the roadway may be sometimes the best choice. When selecting your path of travel ask yourself: -Which path offers maximum visibility? -Which path provides clear space ahead? -Which path provides the clearest space of the side? -Which path provides the smoothest flow of traffic? -Which path provides the best?

Traditional mirror settings

- Outside mirrors are set so the driver can see the back edges of the vehicle. - May be more appropriate for trucks, vans and SUV type vehicles when towing or backing into tight areas. - Passenger vehicles side view mirrors are not designed for backing the vehicle.

Enchanted mirror setting

- Reduces blind spots. - Inside mirror becomes primary mirror for the view to the rear. - Outside mirrors should be adjusted to reduce blind spots and to provide maximum visibility to the side and rear on both sides of the vehicle. - To the left side mirror, the driver must rest their head against the closed window and set the mirror to barley show the rear edge of the vehicle. - To set the right side mirror, the driver should lean to the right so their head is directly below the rear view mirror or above the center console. The mirror should be adjusted the same way as the left side, so that the edge of the right side of your vehicle can barley be seen. - The driver will not see left and right sides of the vehicle when glancing the outside mirrors; however, this adjustment adds 12 to 16 degrees additional viewing area to each side of the vehicle.

Mirror usage when changing lanes

- When a driver is attempting to change lanes, mirrors should be checked before any change of speed or position is made to enable assessment and control of the rear and side space. - Also important to check over the shoulder in the mirror blind spots as well.

Mirror usage when turning

- When the driver prepares to turn, mirrors should be checked before any change of speed or positions; you do this to have control over the rear and side space, the enable assessment. - The driver should assess the space to the rear as soon as the turn is completed, and then asses the space to the front.

Mirror usage when stopping

- When you (a driver) prepares to slow or stop, the drivers eyes should scan first to the rear view mirror. Flash the break lights to alert any following driver. Direct your attention to the rear view mirror until two cars have stopped behind the vehicle. (Don't have to know all that) - As you are directions your attention you should not stare into the rear view mirror instead use short, quick glances. -Also allow for extra space ahead, increasing ability to steer

Work zone danger facts

- Work zones on U.S highways have become increasingly dangerous places for both workers and drivers. - Approximately 35,000 people per year are injured as a result of motor vehicle crashes in work zones. - When approaching work zones you should watch out for cones, barrels, signs, large vehicles, or workers in brightly colored vests to warn you, and direct you where to go. (Also dust can be a hazard). - All temporary signs in work zones have a orange background and black letters or symbols, and tell you what to do, how soon you will encounter the work zone and the speed limit through the work zone.

Ws#1 38. The speed limit for a mobile home park, or on some roads adjacent to parks, is: A) 15mph B) 25 mph C) 45 mph

A) 15 mph

Ws#1 29. The purpose of a regulatory sign is to: A) Control the movement of traffic B) Warn of hazards ahead C) Give information about paces of interest

Safety tips in work zones

As a driver, you should learn and abide by the following safety tips for driving in work zones 1). Watch the traffic around you and be prepared to react by reducing your speed, obeying signs and floggers, and r following distance 2). Do not become oblivious to work zone signs when the work is long term or widespread, and be aware that traffic patterns in work zones can change daily including lane shifts and alternating lane closures. 3). Merge as soon as possible. Motorists can help maintain traffic flow and posted speeds by moving to the appropriate lane at FIRST NOTICE of an approaching work zone. 4). Use extreme caution when driving through a work zone at night whether workers are present or not. 5). Adjust your lane position away from the side where workers and equipment are located when possible. 6). Some work zones, such as line painting, road latching and mowing are mobile. Just because you do not see the workers immediately after you see the warning sign does not mean they are not out there. Observe the posted signs until you see the one that says "End Road Work."

Checking mirror blind areas

Regular side rear view mirrors cannot show all the objects around you, even when angled out an additional 12 to 16 degrees (enchanted setting), you still need to make a mirror blind spot check; it involves making quick eye movement over the shoulder to the left or the right in the direction of intended vehicle movement.

Ws#1 16. Inertia is the primary reason that safety belts are important to a driver in a crash. True or False
