What is a sentence fragment?

A sentence that is not complete. It is missing a subject or a predicate. Are slender and furry. (who is? missing subject) The furry otter. (did what? missing predicate)

Interrogative Sentence

Asks questions. Do you know where the safest place in your home is during a tornado?

What are the four types of sentences?

Declarative, Imperative, Exclamatory, and Interrogative.

Imperative Sentence

Gives a command. Head for shelter immediately when a tornado warning is issued.

How can I find the subject in questions?

In questions, the subject often FOLLOWS the verb. How are the kittens today? <- what is the sentence about? Kittens What did the doctor say? <- who is the sentence about? The doctor If you ever have trouble finding the subject in a question, change the question to a statement

How can I find a subject in orders and directions?

In sentences that give orders or directions, the subject is understood to be you. Look at the lion. (You) Look at the lion. Leonard, tell us what lions eat. Leonard, (you) tell us what lions eat.

When do linking verbs become helping verbs?

When they are "helping" out an action verb

Linking Verb

a word that connects the subject of the sentence to the predicate. Example: Koryn is a wonderful girl. After drinking the old milk, Vladimir turned green.

Action Verb

a word that conveys action (bring, read, walk, run, learn)

Complete Subject

contains ALL the words that tell who or what the sentence is about Our crazy dog howled at the moon.

Simple Predicate
