What is the primary use of growth charts? How would you educate a parent on what the growth chart numbers represent? Use examples to aid in your explanation.
The growth chart records the pattern of growth for your child. So if your child is in the 60th percentile for weight and height, that means that your child is heavier and taller than 60% of other children his/her age. Conversely, that also means that 40% of children in the same age group are heavier than your child. Typically, children will follow a relatively consistent growth line, so don't worry so much on where your child falls in terms of percentile. If he/she is in the 15% percentile and maintains that pattern, then the child is likely growing normally. We are really looking for rapid increases or decreases in these measurements that would be a cause for concern; that's when the doctor would investigate further
