What is the nervous system mainly made up of?

Nervous tissue

Nervous tissue is made from specialized cells called:

Neurons

The central nervous system is composed of:

The brain and spinal cord.

The peripheral nervous system is composed of:

The cranial and spinal nerves that travel to all parts of the body.

What makes the nervous system different from the other body systems?

The nervous system is made up of one type of tissue.

What is a neuron's job?

To send and receive messages.

The two main parts of the netvous system are:

- Central nervous system - Peripheral nervous system

What is the peripheral nervous system's (PNS) nerves made of?

- Sensory neurons - Motor neurons

What are the two parts of the peripheral nervous system?

- Somatic nervous system - Autonomic nervous system

The Central Nervous System (CNS)

- The brain receives information from our sense organs outside the body, for example: our five senses. - The brain also receives information from inside the body called internal stimulus.

The three main sections of the brain are:

1. The cerebrum 2. The cerebellum 3. The medulla

What an internal stimulus?

A change that occurs inside the body.

Whats an external stimulus?

A change that occurs outside the body.

What's a stimulus?

Anything that causes a reaction/ response.

How do sensory neurons react to a stimulus?

By sending an impulse to the spinal cord.

Autonomic nervous system:

Controls responses that are automatic (ones we don't have to think about)

Somatic nervous system:

Controls voluntary responses (ones you have control over)

A stimulus can be:

External or internal

What is transmitted between the axons and dendrites?

Impulses/messages

How do we react to a stimulus?

Interneurons relay the message to motor neurons that control our muscles.

Dendrites:

Small branched of the neuron that receive messages.

What are interneurons?

Special neurons that connect one neuron to another in the spinal cord.

The spinal cord connects:

The brain (Central Nervous System) to the rest of the body (Peripheral Nervous System)

Axons:

The part of the neuron that sends the messages or the pathway of the messages.

What is the largest sense organ of our body?

The skin

What is the job of Motor Neurons?

To carry information from the Central nervous system to the muscles or organs.

What is the job of Sensory neurons?

To carry information from the body to the Central Nervous System.

What's the job of the nervous system?

To monitor and respond to stimuli.

Reflex:

When Sensory Neurons and Motor Neurons work together without the brain. (An automatic response to an external stimulus)
