what is the Qur'an?

The Qur'an or Koran (meaning that which is read or recited) is the sacred book which Muhammad received as revelation from Allah via the angel Gabriel (Jibril) over a period of 23 years beginning in 610 C.E. They believe it is Allah's final word. It tells Muslims how to live their lives, how Allah expected them to live day by day as they submit to His will.

Outline the teachings of the Qur'an

The book is written in Arabic and consists of many chapters which are called surahs. There are 114 surahs altogether and all are written in verses, except for the first surah. They are arranged in the order of the longest to the shortest. There are 6666 ayahs (verses) in it. Muslims regard the Qur'an with the greatest respect: they wash their hands before touching or reading from it, place it above all other books on a bookshelf, it is placed on a special wooden stand for reading, it is never placed on the ground and when it is too old to be read it is burnt or buried.

Differentiate between the Qur'an and the Hadith

While the Quran is the edifice of the religion or the faith called Islam, Hadith are the books containing the life, actions, and sayings of the prophet Muhammad. Hadith are written later than Quran by different scholars having different abilities and memories.
