Messiah, a special king that would save the Jews from oppression.
Why did Jesus' followers begin to think he was the Messiah?
He taught that God would soon establish his kingdom. He spoke out for the poor and outcast. They believed he could heal the sick. Why was Jesus executed? Local leaders feared that his followers might cause trouble during Passover. If a riot broke out, the Romans might punish the whole city. The Roman government had Jesus arrested, beaten, and executed.
